Vintage modern speaker tricks

Postby bshirley395 » 17 Jan 2010, 07:46

Right, just wondering whether you can put a 2266 head throught a 8 ohm single speaker from a Marshall MG50DFX as there is the speaker cable at the back? Because i had to sell my 425A cab as it just rocked the house to much and got complaints from the neighbours so just so i can keep playing it intill i soundproof my recording room.

Also what setting would i need the independance on, on the 2266?

Assuming the speaker in the MG50DFX is at leat 50 watts, you should be okay. May not sound all that great but should be usable for low volume practice.
Set the head to 8 ohms.

Personal preference. Most prefer the 4x12, I like my 2x12.
The speakers themselves make more of a difference as far as tone & volume than the cab they are in.

Yeah very true, im thinking a 2x12 cab and putting G12C greenbacks instead.
Whats your view on that?

2x12 will work great, just avoid the mdf Marshall 1936. Avatar does make very good cabs, and it is birch ply, and very well made.

What is the difference between the birch ply and the mdf?
Is it just sound quality?

Haven't compared the two side by side. It would make sense that the birch might sound a little better. Mine doesn't sound bad, but I must admit it is very directional. Whether the birch is or not I don't know.

Right, i just thought about buying the combo 2266 amp instead of buying a whole new set of speakers and a cab etc.
Also it would be easier and more compact.
Are they just as good sounding as a 2266H with a 2x12?

I compared my Marshall JCM900 MDF 1936 cab (it was all MDF, including baffle), right next to a custom 2x12 made of Birch ply, and there was no comparison. I sold the 1936, and ordered a 2x12 from Sour Mash cabs.
