Got 2 Greenbacks for my 2x12 1936 today!

Postby Gonzo » 23 Jan 2010, 21:30

Well I had to let you guys know, because I'm totally freaking stoked-picked up 2 8ohm 25w Greenback g12m's today at Sam Ash for 109 a piece. These are to replace the g12t-75's that were in my 1936 2x12 that I usually rehearse with. I'm running the 2266 through this, set to 8ohms. They're not even broken in and the sound is 10 times better than the 75's-I won't be able to really crank it until tomorrow, because the whole house is asleep-can't wait.
Surf-if you read this, thanks for letting me know you record with the Greenbacks-I plan on leaving this 2x12 in my house to play at home, low to moderate volume-and to record with-so I went with these mostly based on that comment. I know this cab won't be loud enough to gig with (at least with my current band) but I don't care-I can finally hear the magic in the notes, that I knew was supposed to be there, but just wasn't. I'm no longer afraid to play high notes lolololol.
Man, I though new speakers were supposed to sound like crap!!! I must have REALLY been suffering with those 75's-should have done this a long time ago. I'm sitting as I type this at super quiet volume playing these spank brand new speakers and they sound like cream and sugar compared to my old rig.
Anyway thanks for the help with the choice guys-anyone want a pair of nicely broken in Celestion G12T-75's, cheap??? HAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHA..no really..
The sad ending to the story is...now I have to gradually convert over my 412...argh.

It is not the G12T-75 is a bad speaker its just that it is the wrong choice for the Vintage Modern. You will get years of enjoyment from those Greenbacks.

If you are running 2 8 ohm speakers in parallel through the 1936 then your head should be set to 4 ohms. There is no 4 ohm setting but if you pull out the chassis you will see the tabs on the tranny for 4, 8, 16 ohms. Move the tab you wont be using (either 8 or 16) to the open 4 ohm tab and REMEMBER that that setting is actually 4 ohms.

Thanks Rhino-I actually was running it incorrectly at first. Then I rewired the two 8ohms in series-16ohm load. Went and bought an ohmeter to make sure. I knew I had it right....but the choice between possibly breaking my amp as opposed to buying a $20 tool made me run down to Lowe's. Everything's good. I didn't know about the ability to change it to 4ohms-thanks man, if I ever need it I'll know.

Just an update on my 212 with the new Greenbacks-I played a 4 hr gig last night-had the 2266 Master almost dimed, body and detail on 1 o'clock-tube screamer for lead boost-the speakers freakin' rocked. The 212 greenies kept up with my band (bass, drums, rhythm guitar). I even had the cab on the floor and never had a problem hearing. Did I mention we play LOUD? If you are considering these speakers, but are worried about 25watts-don't be. The breakup may not be something you want if you are playing alot of clean stuff, but Vintage Modern users don't do a heck of alot of that do we? I could go on and on-so much articulation on the Strat that I never got before-back up the volume on the guitar and chords and single notes were twangy and colorful. Crank it up and it sounded like early Van Halen-ish tone. Highs jumped out of the band mix, but were NOT HARSH. Ahhhhhh-never loved my amp this much until I heard it with the proper speakers. Can't wait to load up my 4x12 1960. Now I have to decide which speakers, and I'm inclined to maybe try mixing the g12m with the g12h30. Anyone running a cab this way? I'm a little concerned about the db sensitivity difference. Thanks for reading.
