Whats the most unique speaker combo you've seen?

Postby Julesman64 » 05 Mar 2010, 11:25

Looking to reload my 1960 with something new and different. I'm looking for ideas for unique combinations of speakers of any kind (except any that cost $300+ a piece). Here's one I've seen: 2 MC-90 Black Shadows (from a Mesa cab) and 2 Eminence Texas Heats. Its not really for me, but its a weird combo, and the owner is pleased. So what have you guys seen?

Surf, I'm sure you've got some interesting input on this.

Ya I do. Over the past couple of years I have been trying many combinations and different speakers. These however have been all celestions in the test. I will save you a bunch of money and time by summerizing my opinion on them.

- Speaker combinations in a X pattern are overrated. One speaker type ends up drowning out the other and just think there is no advantage unless the speakers match up exactly in their sensitivity.

- Greenbacks are the correct speaker for the VM

- The VM sounds good through almost any celestion except the G12T-75s

- The classic Lead 80s are very underated

- The Alnico Golds sound awesome but not $100 per speaker more awesome

- I did not hear any advantage with the Heritage Greenbacks over a standard greenback, don't waste your money

- It is so important to break greenbacks in, there is a very noticable tone advantage when they are. They also seem to take longer than other celestions to break in.
- I do not buy into the idea that UK celestions sound better than China made celestions, just not true.
- All 4x12 cabinets are not created equal, do not underestimate the importance of the cabinet quality. You get what you pay for.
- A open back 2x12 can sound really good but speakers you liked in a 4x12 will not always be your favorite in a 2x12.

Hope that helps
