Peavey 5150 II

Postby Green Manalishi » 07 May 2010, 14:14

I traded my Triple rec for a Peavey 5150II and a JCM 900 4100. I sold off the 900, and I am left with the 5150II.

I have to say I am very happy getting rid of that Mesa and picking up the 5150II.

Practiced with it last night and it was simply terrific. Very little knob fiddling to get a good sound out of any channel. I was running thru my Mesa cab. Very Marshally tones.

It has Winged C (new production) 6L6s that bias up correctly (about 38ma) and all Electro-Harmonix 12ax7s.

I was struggling to get a good sound from the Mesa, but no issue getting it out of the Peavey.

Anyway, just wanted to share that.

Wow... 'Peavy' and 'good sound' doesn't normally sit in the same sentence together but hey... well done man! :bgrin

For metal tones I actually think Peavey is a very good choice. The 6505 (5150 now that Eddie is gone) can get pretty damn brutal. They're coming out with the 6534 this year which is the same amp but with el34s instead of 6L6s.
If I were looking for those types of tones (I'm not) I'd be waiting with baited breath.

If I was in a metal band I'd get one of these. I think they're great amps.

You'll have to excuse my ignorance... in late 80's we all thought Peavy sucked hard.... they are only marginally better now IMO.

To a lot of folks Fender and Gibson really sucked in the '70s, and to some they still suck (not to me.)

In the 80's we all wore spandex and played bright pink and green guitars. Glad those days are gone.

This model is far better than I thought of Peavey, but then I played it in a band setting, and it is impressive. Far better than the Mesa Triple Rec I had, so easy to get good tones out of, unlike the Mesa.

Build quality is very good, and dare I say better than Marshall? Seems a lot more solid than my 2466.

In fact I had Peavey Classic 30. Had to change speaker as it sucked hard. Had to change tubes as they were pretty much the same. But then - I was very unhappy to sell it, but the amp was not for styles I play, but it had one of best cleans and break-up tones I've ever heard.
Fokus Strat, alder, maple, 3x SC, natural finish, RM Pickups RS6s
Fokus Strat, alder, maple, 2x SC, 1x HB, transparent red finish
