Genealex Gold Lion's Class 5 head

Postby Neaves The Wicked » 14 Jan 2016, 06:32

I posted this in the Marshall Forum and thought I would post it here as well since I haven't seen any real posts about it online and decided I would be the vocal on the subject. :bgrin

I ordered a Gold Lion EL84 and a Gold Lion 12AX7 for the V1 position (Non gold pin version).

I was originally running a JJEL84 and a JJ12AX7 in V1.

I received the tubes yesterday in the mail. I got them through Antique Electronic Supply. I played through the amp before switching to the new tubes for reference and I can say there is a difference in tone. The amp seems warmer sounding , smooth and more alive to my ears. I really don't have anything negative to say about them. I just hope they hold up and don't fail. Currently I am using a V30 loaded 4x12. I hope this helps someone else to build up their confidence in making the purchase. They are great tubes imho.

Tube quality obviously can make a difference. The Golden Lions are about as good on quality as anything manufacturered today.

I am not a fan of JJ tubes, to me they have always sounded dark and take away from your amp. The golden lions are a very "open" sounding tube and should give you good harmonic content.

I am not suprised you like them better then the JJ tubes you had.

I had the golden lion 12AX7's in V1 and V2 along with a NOS mullard EL84. Sounded amazing; stuck them in my vintage modern 2266C and there they sit (in the pre amp spots) for 4 + years and counting. Took HDR to a whole new level.....

JJ's just don't cut it anywhere in an amp. I would rather scour E-Bay for old RCA/GE/Sylvania/Phillips/ect tubes that i can get for cheap as long as the test numbers look right they will work. I have been running these tubes in V1-V2 of my 6100's with Sino's behind them with killer results. I then tried these tubes in the PI and holy shit, that is the combo.
