Found a great speaker cabinet for my Class 5 head

Postby GuitarBuilder » 02 Sep 2012, 15:48

Up to a few days ago I was playing my Class 5 head through a standard 1960A cabinet with Celestion G12-75's. I haven't been very happy with the tone; I needed to turn the Bass way down and still it sounded boomy. The high end wasn't doing it for me, either. Out of desperation, I started researching mods and ordered parts from Mouser - I was ready to modify this monster!

About a week ago a pristine 1965A cabinet showed up on eBay, with stock Celestion G10L-35's. I won the auction and got the cab in a few days ago. The Class 5 head fit beautifully on top and I plugged it in. Holy smoke! A completely new tone came out of this combination! Gone is the boomy bass and glass, in comes a glorious sound! I was stunned!

I was originally thinking of replacing some of the stock speakers with Alnico Gold or Greenbacks, but I like this so much I'm not going to mess with it! Oh, and the mods will be shelved indefinitely.......

This is one match made in heaven!

Nice pairing, sometimes a couple of 10s really can sound good. Don't see those cabs around to often anymore.

You have seen my C5 (combo) + 1965A and my H&K TM18 on top on the other Marshall forums.

Mine is open back and still a bit bassy.

Great find, I love mine!!!

have both 1965a and 1965b cabs , great cabs and very underrated. use them with various heads.
Class 5 also works well with VM greenbacks , plug it into a 2266 ( speaker cable long enough to plug into head) combo nice sound

Looks sweet! Too bad those speakers are no longer in production. Anything like them that's similar?

Great question! There are not a lot of 10" Celestions in the current lineup and I don't know which one is closest to the G10L-35s. Perhaps the G10 Vintage.....

Maybe Celestion can help out. Drop them a line?

And as far as I know, G10L-35's were only used in these Marshall cabs.

So I did ask Celestion, and got a very quick answer from Dr. Decibel:

"The Tube 10 would be closest but for the biggest sound with a 10” I’d go for the Greenback.

Regards

Doc"

Not sure what he means by Tube 10......
