jj el84 rattle.

Postby jrphatstrat » 21 Apr 2013, 06:37

I have had my c5 for 2 years. Version 2, no rattle, love it! I recently purchased a set of jj tubes because I wanted to try a change of tone. I opened up my c5 and found a TAD el84,a red script Marshall 12ax7 and a silver script Marshall 12a,x 7. Changed each to a jj. At about volume level 4 I got a rattle when I played a high g note. I swapped the TAD back in the el84 spot, rattle gone. The two jj preamps with the TAD sound pretty great so I guess I'll save the jjel84 as a backup. Have any of you ever had this happen with jj tubes or did I just get a dud.

Not uncommon to have a rattle issue with a EL84 tube. If the TAD is working just stick with that, I am not a big fan of JJ quality or sound.

yeah, every reveiw I've read said that JJs where great, I also thought that was supposed to be stock on a c5. the jj 12ax7s sound great, really brightened up the sound, but the el84 had no growl and a bad rattle. I guess I will save it in case the TAD blows, till I can order a new one of course. The TAD's are more expensive but well worth it!

I'd bring the EL84 tube back and get it replaced.

bought it off amazon, honestly it would be more of a pain to ship it back, also I got a really good deal on the set so i'm not all that worried about it, the two 12ax7's paired with the existing el84 gave me the sound I wanted.

The stock EL84 in my C5-01 was a JJ EL84. But is was glued to the rubber damper which made it a real pain to swap out. The 12AX7s were a Red Marshall and Silver Marshall JJs.

I'm with Surf on the EL84 rattle thing. Both of my EL84 amps (Class 5 and Blues Jr) rattle at high volume. I think it is just part of the personality of the tube. Surf is a JJ hater. I am indifferent. I certainly think that there are better tubes out there, but for price and availability I run them in a lot of my amps. The big thing is they work, and especially if you are running the amp hard a lot you just need something that is economical to feed it.
