belton retainer on class 5 v2

Postby Rockman195 » 17 May 2013, 21:31

Hi, ive had my marshall class 5 for a little over a year and its finally gotten to the point where ive needed to do something about the notorious rattle. One of the things that im doing is the belton spring retainer for the el84, but in all the pictures ive seen of this retainer installed on the class 5 the springs are connected to the lower bracket of the wire retainer. This wouldnt be a problem except that i have the version 2 class 5 and one of the differences is the swan neck retainer as opposed to the wire retainer so i dont have that piece. My question is do i need to buy this;
http://grangeramp.com/shop/index.phpmai ... cts_id=161

Just for the lower bracket? If i have to its not a big deal, i just dont want to buy pieces that i dont need if the the belton retainer can be mounted to the chassis directly. Thank you in advance for any help and insight.

Give Curt a call at Granger amps and see what he says. I know he has worked to remove the tube rattle issue on Class 5 amps.

Also there is a new EL84 tube out there that guys are claiming does not rattle like other EL84s, take a look at these.

Do you need to adjust the bias in a class 5 or does that tube just drop right in?

The Class 5 is a cathode biased amp. What this means is the amp is self biasing. Unlike a fixed bias amp where you have a trim pot to set the tube idle.

Just plug and play. :Thumbs

Oh i see, so this would be the case with any replacement tubes?

Btw did every mod possible and i still have a rattle, gonna try new tubes. Should i replace the preamp tubes as well or just the power. Any opinions on the jj el84 vs that jj el844? From everything ive read about the el844 im intrigued.

The culprit is always the power tube, fact is EL84s are just not built like the used to be. I have not tried the new JJ 844, however I have read where its build is much sturdier then than the regular EL84 and that Class 5 owners are reporting no rattles with it. Sure worth a try.

I would be interested to see that review as well. Just curious because I have forgotten, what was the EL84 variant that was racking up a body count of Class 5's here a few months ago?

It will burn one of the internal fuses (located on the PCB).
When this happened with my C5, I thought it was a dead OT (couldn't find a burnt fuse).
About 6 months later, my dissapointment turned into "have to fix", and found it.

Also asked about any official reply/remark about the C5 combined with these tubes.
No answer sofar.

Would be nice if Steve (or any other Marshall representative) could look into this.
