Class5 head dummy load

Postby dedekind » 12 Jun 2013, 11:25

Hi! I'm new to the forum and I purchased a Class5 head a couple of days ago. So far I'm delighted with it.

Anyway, I have a curious thing going on. I'm not sure if it happens to all class5's or there is something with mine (I bought it used). The thing is: if I plug headphones in the headphone jack, and move the selector to "headphones", the headphones work perfectly, but the sound still comes out of the speaker cab. Is this normal? Could there be a problem with the dummy 16ohm load not working or something? I would think that the headphone switch will mute the speaker with the load..

Thanks!

With the Class 5 head switched into headphone mode it is safe to disconnect the cabine/speaker.

Hi, thanks!

yes I know that it's safe, but it is so precisely because it engages the dummy load. But if I DON'T disconnect the cab, it still sounds, which is weird. If that's a sign of the dummy load not working (?), maybe it won't be safe to use the headphone switch.

I don't know well enough to answer that, perhaps someone else can chime in here. The owners manual can be downloaded here.

Great, thanks though. I also wish there was a simple way to test if everything is working correctly, because AFAIK with this amp, it's not such a big deal if nothing is connected (according to some comments on other threads). Still, I don't want to do anything potentially unsafe.

It seems reasonable to me that the head might work that way since there's no internal speaker wired in like on the combo. I don't have my combo anymore or I'd do an experiment to see what happens if i had an external cab plugged in and headphones too.

My C5H is the same when switched to HP, the 8 ohm speaker tap will still produce a reduced output. The 16 ohm tap is off. As mentioned above is ok to unplug the speaker .

Hey thanks for the info. My speaker is 8ohm. I have been told by other users that their speakers do get silenced when in HP mode, but I'm thinking it may be because they are 16 ohm.
