Strange volume issues

Postby MakoML » 16 Jul 2013, 17:49

I don't know if it is the Class 5 Combo or the pickup, but I am getting really weak sound coming from the high E string. If I play a run across the neck the volume drop from B string to high E string is huge :dunno

Amp EQ doesn't make a bit of difference either and I can't compensate for it. The guitar is a northern ash strat body / maple neck and a SD Hybrid HB in the bridge with an A2 magnet. This is almost like the icepick spike a Duncan JB gets in a bright guitar but in reverse..................... I play this guitar thru an ART SGX2000 and a SS power amp and it sounds great.

The only thing that makes me wonder about it being the amp is last week after playing an hour or so the sound output completely disappeared and didn't come back until I turned off the amp and powered back up.

I haven't played thru tubes in probably 22 years or so and just picked up this amp for Christmas hoping it would have a great dimed plexi vibe at lower volumes. It gets there but this volume drop thing is killing the joy.

Did you buy this amp new or used, and have you checked the tubes? I have had the volume randomly cut out three times. The first was because of a bad ground in my guitar. The other two times were because of a power tube on its way out.

Bought it "barely used" from a local studio musician who liked his eleven rack better.

Think I will take a look inside it this weekend and see what it looks like. Might do the bedroom trick while I am in there too.

I play this thing with everything dimed but the bass which is at maybe 3 at most. Usually have it blasting thru an old Carvin 4x12 with stock english made celestions in it and it sounds sweet. Sometimes I play it that way thru the headphone jack with plug half way in.

If it keeps cutting out might take it to a shop.

I agree with GuitarBuilder. If you take it apart and replace the tubes, and it STILL doesn't work then I would take it to a shop. There are a few fuses on the board that can go out, but I leave anything on a board to a tech. A few hundred volts DC is not something to mess around with.
