Class 5 EQ

Postby ClassicRock88 » 30 Jul 2013, 07:13

Dumb question about he EQ on a Class 5, a JCM 800 and a 1959.

The C5 and JCM both have active EQ's, correct? Meaning that above 5 on the dial (noon) boosts a frequency and below 5/noon cuts it, with 5/noon being neutral.

A 1959 has a passive EQ, correct? Meaning that 10 (roughly 5 o'clock) is neutral (with the exception of Presence) and the EQ can only cut certain frequencies.

SO... A C5 or JCM with all EQ controls set at 5 is the same as a 1959 with all BMT controls at 10. So to EQ a Class 5 or a JCM in a similar fashion to a plexi you need to treat 5 as "wide open" and then work back from there.

Is this reasonably correct or am I missing the mark completely?

I really think the Class 5 has passive EQ.
Not enough change in tone while changing the settings IMO (no, not an electromagician).
And it doesn't get louder when you "add" frequencies (which is what active EQ basically does, it boosts the volume of some freqs, passive only cuts (which is what I hear when dialing in the C5))

I could be wrong though... not measuring or tinkering my own amps.

I am not measuring or tinkering either. However, yesterday I tried it through my G12-65 4x12 and I had the EQ all set at or below noon. Bass was at about 8:30-9:00, Middle was at noon and Treble was at about 10:30-11:00. It sounded really sweet. It lost a bit of high end of course but it had a very smooth and sweet sound without the shrill top end that it had before. Plus, it loved my MXR M-77 and Boss OS2.
