Class 5 Head and Sourmash 2061cx Cab. Speakers?

Postby Cousin Muely » 08 Sep 2013, 17:28

Hey guys,

If you were looking to load Sourmash's 2061CX with speakers to match the Class 5 what would you choose? I'm thinking a combination of a Vintage 30 and say a G12H. A bunch of y'all have a way more extensive speaker collection than i do so i value your opinions.

FYI,

Future plans are to mate up 2 of these cabs with the head. One straight and one slanted along with a Bad Cat Unleash so whatever speakers are chosen they will have to handle the output of the Unleash yet still give that Classic Rock tone that i like from the Class 5. The Badcat's specs are: 16 ohms = 50 watts, 8 ohms = 100 watts and 4 ohms = 180 watts. If it all works out i plan to double the entire rig for the 2nd Head i have with stereo Delay and Chorus effects through the Badcat's loops.

Kind of an adventurous (costly) plan but i like the idea of the nostalgic look of twin Marshall stacks in stereo that can be cranked and be about the right volume. Yeah, somebody could say "Why don't you just buy another amp with more power and an effects loop?" I already like the Class 5s dimed tone plus i have 50 years of Marshall tones in the 1 watts which i also could use with this rig if i wanted. Mount the Badcats, Power Supply and Effects in a small rack and this would be somewhat portable. I blame this whole idea on Aristotle's use of the Unleash and he has spoken highly of it.

Stay with the Vin30, although you could use a much lower watt speaker I think the Vin30 is going to still sound best with the C5.

Yeah, that would work and more than cover the wattage. Seems i remember that is what Aristotle recommended also with his rig. Isn't the Vintage 30 supposed to mimic the Celestion Blue with higher power or at least have the same tonal flavor? Sounds like i am describing the Gold but i think i have read that somewhere. I have a Blue and i do like the way it sounds with the Head. For one thing, i get the bite that i feel i am missing sometimes with the stock speaker. Amp is much louder also.

Of all the speakers I've tried with my C5H the Marshall/Celestion Wolverine speakers sound the best to me. I know these speakers get no love but they tame the beast. But you run it thru the BadCat and I don't have one.

Have you considered the Creamback? I haven't tried those yet, but I am considering trying these puppies out. I watched a head to head comparison with Greenbacks and the tone was only slightly off of each other and the Creambacks give you the higher power handling.

I looked at those but it seemed they were described as being "smooth". I am looking for some good top end bite out of the speakers. The stocks sound good but I catch myself running the treble up on the amp and my controls on my guitars. Especially my Les Paul. I feel I have nowhere to go tone wise once I do that. With the head plugged into my Alnico Blue, at first I didn't like it because there was such a difference from what I was used to hearing from the stock speakers in the matching 1x10 cab. After staying with it and making adjustments I found that speaker has the bite I had been missing and I feel like I have plenty of adjustments available from just the guitar based on the volume and tone controls but at 15 watts it's just not a match if I connected the Unleash for more volume. The Golds would be nice but at $300 or so x 8 thats just too much cash for speakers for this idea.

I think Surf is right, V30s are known for what I am wanting. I just thought maybe some guys had found a good combo set to match with the V30s.

I have a V30 4x12 cab that I could try out and tell you what I hear vs the C5 cab. I haven't tried out that cab with the C5 head yet. I wouldn't be able to let you know till tonight or tomorrow night though.

You'll have a similar rig to me (pictured in avatar) its a great cab for the C5. I started with a Hellatone V30 & a G12T-75 that sounded great. I recently swapped those into another cab and now have the sourmash loaded with two G12H anniversary's that sound awesome with all my marshalls.

Cool Acidvoodoo, yeah, it's pics like that that have given me part of the idea. Nice shot. Whats your thoughts on those G12Hs vs the stock speakers. Assuming that you may have had or tried the matching ext cab. This it's what I have st the moment. I just want to take this to the next level with 12s and bigger closed back cabs like the 2061.

Thanks man, your mini stacks look great! I have a combo with the ext. cab, I like it but pluggin into a 2x12 or 4x12 with the C5 is where its at IMO...I don't think the stock speaker can even compete with a 12 inch Anniversary or a V30, its just so much fuller sounding.

Cool man. I'm going to start with 1 cab and go from there. Also, I may be posting a couple of mint condition combos and ext cabs shortly if anybody's interested.

And I agree that the stocks are nit bad at all for being stock speakers. The only aftermarket speakers I have are the Blue and a Weber Blue Pup. Either one of those opens up the tone of the amp much better. Can't wait to try some Vintage 30s or whatever.

I wasn't able to get time to play last night, but I will try to compare the two tonight and let you know my opinion tonight. I wish that I had a way to record the comparison for you, but I do not.....sigh. I will get something in the future for recording......one day!
