I have found that running it on 'low' with the headphone jack trick, that the highs are reduced and the clarity becomes too muddy, flabby. Yes the speakers are not being driven hard, but it just does not have the treble bite to it.
Can the capacitor be changed to alter the tone?

Right on Sikter!!!

Interesting Shaun because I notice the opposite effect with the headphone jack trick. Do you have the first generation combo?

I have the head. Bought new about 18 months ago.

Hmmmm. I wonder if there is an issue with your head? I don't have a flubby sound from it either way. It just sounds fuller at the 5 watt mode vs the headphone. Could it be a bad tube? Not sure about the capacitor being swapped out for the headphone jack. I'd leave that to Steve Dawson to answer or an amp tech :)
