8 ohm speaker in the Class5 combo?

Postby Peveo » 19 Nov 2013, 06:10

Although its a nice amp y still find my Clas5 combo a bit to harsh sounding.
Y swapped the tubes for a set of Mullards( ecc83 and EL84) and that mad a chance for the better.
Y swapped the 16 ohm 15 watt speaker for a 8 ohm Vintage Celestion and that sounded a bit warmer to me but........

Can y do that ????

Is it a problem to use a 8 ohm speaker instated of the 16 ohm factory speaker?

I,m a nitwit when it comes to technical things so y hope any advise is welcome

Under normal circumstances you would be very careful to match speaker impedance to a valve amp's output.
However, Steve Dawson (designer of the Class 5) has said in previous posts that it is ok to use an 8 Ohm speaker with this amp with no adjustments. Have a trawl back through the Class 5 posts to check.

Yeah. Strictly speaking it is not GOOD for the amp. However, SteveD said that they tested the C5 extensively without any load whatsoever and it was fine. This is because the amp is so low power. You could not do this with a big one.

Also, most people say to keep the bass below noon. I actually don't agree. I have always kept my treble below noon. Keep the mids up and give it a healthy amount of bass. That helped to warm mine up. The C5 tends to get tinny between 10 and 2 o'clock on the dial. How long did you give the stock speaker to break in? Since it is a 15 watt rated speaker and the amp puts out a peak of about 8, you have to hit the stock speaker pretty hard for a while to break it in. After you do that it sounds pretty good. It is just a brittle sounding little thing from the factory. Remember it's only a single 10.

I have an 8 ohm 10" (hemp cone) Tone Tubby "San Rafael" that I been wanting to try in my C5-01 but have been worried about the ohm mismatch.

Let us know if there was a tone improvement in the swap.
