Class 5 Mod

Postby kingbee » 06 Nov 2010, 20:39

Just saw this in the Les Paul Forum:

I just did this mod myself and it works perfectly. It doesn't interfere with any of the other functions of the amp (if you plug headphones in it still switches the speaker off) but when the headphones are not plugged in just switching to "headphones" runs the amp at 1/4 watt through the internal speaker.

The mod looks like this:

Enjoy

Yeah, looks interesting. I did the bedroom mod trick which works well. I would like to hear Steves thoughts on this too.

Steve probably won't be able to comment specifically on this mod for obvious reasons, but he has always said on this forum that it is your amp and if you want to mod it then great.

Neat idea without requiring any extra parts! I just tried it, works very nicely! Now I can have that same great tone late at night without annoying the people who live below me. :yea

This mod is completely reversible too if anyone was worried about that.

How does this mod compare to the headphone/bedroom half-plugged trick? Is there any tone loss?

Eh. Why wouldn't he comment on it?
What's so different between commenting and advising us on the bedroom mod and this? :dunno

For a couple of possible reasons-

This mod involves modifying the amp and voiding the warranty and, more important, it involves working inside an amp that may contain potentially lethal voltages, even unplugged, and Marshall can't recommend doing that in order to protect themselves from liability.

It should be exactly the same, just more convenient.

I think that modding automatically removes their liability...
So no real reason not to comment on certain mods.

Whoops, got ahead of myself there. I was thinking of the rattle-cure which does involve messing around inside the chassis.
But saying that, still yes.I totally agree with JCM. Steve has and does comment and advise on the mods and goings on here which will in effect void your warranty for eg. the bedroom mod/using an 8 ohm cab instead of 16...
So there's really no reason.
Put it this way;I'd rather hear it straight from him and have him NOT recommend it than go ahead and try it because of some internets expert :pimp says it's AOK cause it worked for him and fry me the amp or both to a crisp. :bgrin

What do you want me to say guys? It's just a mod that hard wires the bedroom volume trick at the PCB instead of the speaker lead.
Still my guitar gently weeps

There's a capacitor (C50 - 10uF) and a resistor (R51 - 47ohm?) in series with each other, connected to ground on the output pcb. They appear to affect tone for the headphone jack.

Has anyone ever reomoved them to see what affect it has (I'm not saying this would be a good idea. I'm just wondering what the affect would be)?
