New JJ lower power version EL84 called a EL844

Postby Dave W » 04 Dec 2010, 20:43

Anyone try the new JJ EL844 lower power tube in a Class5 yet?

There is a detailed description on the Eurotubes website, but basically its stating its a new designed tube for EL84 powered amps that is lower output. Instead of max dissipation of 12 watts its only 9 watts. So its suppose to be a few decibles quieter with the same/similar sound and not as loud, so tube breakup at earlier volume and overall less volume.

Was wondering if anyone tried this yet as if its a good sounding tube and good structurally, it may be a benefit in a Class5 so you can dime the amp and not hit the power tube and chassis with as much sound/pressure off the speaker/cab walls.

Interesting. It seems there are several folks that love their Class 5's but for whatever reason can't open them up. Lucky for me I can pretty much everyday and do so with extreme vigor. :rocker :jam :yea

I am curious to see how this goes over with some of y'all but I like the loudness that the C5 gives me right now. Not that loud but loud enough to be heard over the strings clankin'!!! :party

Yeah...no complaints about the volume here. I have played other 5 watter combos like Epi, Blackheart, and felt they were louder/harsher. May have been the design or the speakers or whatever, but the Class5 just sounds good without thoughts of it being too loud. Quite perfect volulme dimed really. I am new with the amp, but confused about reviews I have read that mention it very/too loud. Good match with the speaker I think. I use humbuckers- Seymour Duncan Alnico II's which are lower output, but I do not think high output pickups could make a massive difference in overall volume.

Maybe the Class5 is like the Vintage Modern, where the sound/frequencies are just more tolerable/pleasing to the ear than other amps.

If this EL844 doesn't change anything except the volume output, that could be a real boon for a lot of people.

Several people are looking for ways to play at a lower volume. Mine is bearable when it's sitting on carpeting, but on a hardwood floor, it's quite loud! My 14 y.o. son can't stand to be in the room with it (young ears), so we have to jam with another amp.

If anyone has experienced one, I'd sure like to hear about it. Otherwise I may just be the first to try one out.

I ordered one and put it right in there: it has a reduced headroom indeed and sounds a little hotter, even at bedroom level - not a BIG difference, but very welcome to me. And OOPS - the rattle is gone - hahaha! :violin

I just swapped them this morn'n and love the sound and response of it. I've had it lay'n around for a while, I was looking to sell the Class 5 as I didn't like it and never used it, but now it a different beast. Sound more like a JMP than the JMP1. Also tried a pair in my TSL602 thru a pair of THD Yellow Jackets and don't care too much for them in it.

I swapped out the stock valve with an EL844 within a week or so when I got the C5...I love the earlier breakup and the slightly lower volume...

I order one, I'm interested in trying it. Should be good. But my class 5 is also heavily modded too so we'll see.

I ordered one and can't wait to try it. I am also hoping it will help keep the Randall isocab I intend to buy even more tolerable for the wife. I wonder if I'll notice a change through the headphones.

Cool tube, sounds very similar to the stock JJ my amp came with and the other JJ el84 I ordered. It has a nice compression when cranked and perhaps a tad more gain. It's a cool option. Worth trying it out for $11.

Did you notice any loudness reduction?

I might just order 4 of these with some regular EL84s when my stocks finally wear out. As some of you may know I play through 4 Class 5s also supplemented by a PA for a little Echo. I am getting this setup pretty much dialed in and am enjoying it a lot more but it is loud as hell in my house at cranked volume. A little reduction in volume at home would be nice as long as I keep the same tone. If I do a gig I could just change them out.
