Marshall MA50C used experience

Postby Muziekschuur » 28 May 2015, 06:41

Hi. I bought a used MA50C as my first ever Marshall. I was taken by the clean. and the blend knob clean crunch was also a big plus. now you can have crunch with a clean bottom. Nice. So I got it used. And there are some issues. Wich the owner was very upfront with and the price was accordingly. So i'm okey with it. I turned up the amp an ticked the powertubes. They are microphonic. I got the amp with the spring reverb separated. The leads in the tank were resoldered but when I put the reverb back no sound. If the reverb rattles it can be heard in the speaker tho.

Since the solderingjob was fairly ok my first impression is it might be a fuse. Is there a fuse in the MA50C guarding the reverb signal? The amp works well. When I took out the chassis. I saw that all caps are ok and nothing is damaged on the circuitboards. The amp was used half a year. Before that it had been in a store.

The amp is 63,5 cm wide. And Marshall does not carry a 1x12 cabinet that wide. Wich is too bad. Cause I'd love to have a cabinet underneath this amp. The Eminence AX75 sounds quite honky. I have two 1x12 Trace Elliot cabs wich have Celestion 80 lead speakers in them. Would I use those or order a 25 watt 16 ohm greenback?

Look: More work: the cab is 8 ohms. So it needs to be 16 ohm to pair it with the MA50C. Hmmm...

For a 2x12 to be 16 ohms you would need two 8 ohm speakers wired in series.
To be 8 ohms you would need either two 16 ohm speakers wired in parallel or two 4 ohm speakers wired in series. There really isnt a good way to wire a 2x12 for 8-16 with a switch.

There are severall aftermarket (Marshall) switchable patchpanels on the market. I was wondering which of those would be smart.

This one states 4 & 16 ohms. Wich would not be correct... Are there others?

Ah I get it. In a 4x12 it takes two 16 ohms together and you get 8. And after that it goes serial or parallel to get to either 4 or 16 ohms. And the two sides are 8 when in stereo. So it doesn't matter if this panel is used in a 4x12 or 2x12. It will give me the same options. I just need to swap the 16 ohm speakers for 8 ohm versions.... Right... Duh... Should have figured that one out quite a bit sooner.
