Marshall MA settings

Postby Dale » 17 Jul 2010, 02:24

Just curious what everyone out there has had success with in dialing in these amps. I am still knob fiddling, mostly with the gain and crunch ones, lol. But please if you don't mind could some folks that have gotten some of their amps dialed in share their settings?

Maybe some sound clips?

Thanks,

Dale.

I've been using the presence at 2, the resonance at 3 and reverb at 6. Red channel: Volume at 5 - 7, treble at 5, middle at 5, bass at 5, gain at 9 and crunch balance at 7. Green channel: Volume at 5 - 7, treble at 5, middle at 5 and bass at 5.

I use MA with pedals and without so settings are bit different. Presence 2-3, resonance 3.
Clean channel is alway without pedals, bass at 9, middle 10 and treble 10.
Gain channel with pedals...crunch balance at 3 , gain 9, bass 9, middle 10 , treble 12.
Gain channel without pedals...crunch balance 3 and gain depends on what i play, mostly at 12, bass 10 , middle 1 and treble 1.
But it depends a lot on what guitar and pickups you have, I use gibson Dirtyfingers humbuckers...very hot pickups and very loud too.
Oh yeah, and don't forget to turn it up :party this thing works best cranked.

Yeah I was reffering controls with clock face in mind.
By the way I just found out that Marshall Guv'nor pedal works amazing with MA gain channel set to light crunch, I should record some sounds with this baby now.

Resonance = 8
presence = 3.5
Treble = 5.5
Mid = 8
Bass = 8
Gain = 5 with the boost engaged,

Also use an 808 tube screamer with the keely mod in the front end with relatively moderate settings.......I play metal :)

Clean settings as follows

Treble = 6
Mid = 5
Bass = 3.5

Reverbs always on 0

Hello
I'm using also a Boss GT-10 this is connected to the amp using the 4 cables method.

Also very important, I was experiencing some tone ajustments issues prior re-biasing the amp. One pair of EL34 were at 70Ma and the other pair was at 85 mA right value should be 76mA for both pair.

CLEAN

BASS 1 O'clock
MID 11
TREB 11 (I like my sound mellow and I think the MA is VERY VERY bright)

O/D
(note i'm using a clean bost for more gain during solos)
CRUNCH VOLUME at MAX
GAIN 10 O'clock
BASS 13 O'clock
MID 12
TREB 12

MASTER SECTION

REVERB none (i'm using the Boss GT-10 reverb, Why ?? because i'm able to shot it off automaticaly when using a Delay for solos)

RESONANCE 3 O'clock when playing in appartment
0 during Band practice or live performance.

PRESENCE 0 when playing in appartment
3 during Band practice or live performance.

Wow, pretty high bass settings, I cut bass on my eq pedal and still I have to set it like at 9-10 o clock max, otherwise it sounds too boomy at high levels. Maybe it's dirty fingers humbuckers, or my personal taste, dunno.
I also found out that gain sounds better to me when preamp is boosted by a pedal in front of amp than turning gain on amp itself, well , that's just my opinion. :bgrin

I guess, at this level it's personnal taste ! I'm using double humbukers too (seymour duncan) on a Charvel San Dimas.

You need also to keep in mind that i'm using a Boss multi effect processor (GT-10) and this little box can altern the overall sound of the Amp. But I must admit that I love to have a nice fat and dirty sound :jam
Note that i'm NOT using the Amp simulator or any EQ from inside the GT-10 when using my MA.

I'm doing a gig this saturday night, I will try to have it on tape so you guys can see and ear what it sound like !

Ciao !

I thought I'd try and get this thread back up and running by posting my settings. I still haven't had a chance to get the amp to a rehearsal room, so these are based on low volume playing only, but here goes anyway:

(these are all from 0-10)

Presence: 2
Resonance: 10
Reverb: 4

OVERDRIVE
Volume: varies
Treble: 8
Middle: 7
Bass: 8.5
Gain: 5
Crunch Balance: 10

CLEAN
Volume: varies
Treble: 8
Mid: 6.5
Bass: 7

I have an original Marshall Guv'nor and an MXR GT-OD in front of the amp. They're set so that I can get a couple of different flavours of overdrive through the clean channel, and they can also drive the un-boosted overdrive channel very nicely. And then sometimes I just use the boosted overdrive on its own for a great metal rhythm sound. I then have a 10-band EQ in the loop, which I'm thinking about setting up as a solo boost.

Set this way, with no boost on the OD channel I can get loads of variation of rhythm tone just by using different pickups and the volume control on the guitar.

To give some context, I play a range of styles from early ZZ Top, through 80s thrash, and onto more modern stuff like Children of Bodom and Lamb of God. I don't sound exactly like any of those bands, but it's a fun enough sound to play through that honestly I'm having loads of fun regardless.

Over to the rest of you....

Paul.

Sounds good paul! the MA loves boost pedals in the front end. If you get something diode based thats more transparent, you can get some disgusting metal tones that would easily get you playing more lamb of god!

I see your resonance is on 10 lol I used to do that when I first got it at bedroom volume, then when I cranked it I found it too much! I still run it at about 6 though as I like a bit of brown noise :jam

@jagermike66:

I remember reading a Steve D post where he mentioned having Resonance on full and Presence on around 3/10 for low volume use, and then swapping the settings for high volume use (i.e. Presence maxed out and Resonance on around 3/10), so I'm expecting a couple of tweaks once the volume goes up. Which pretty much matches up exactly with your experience too.

One other question then: did you have any particular pedals in mind when you mentioned using a transparent boost?

Cheers,
Paul.
