12au7 in 2204

Has anybody ever tried a lower gain tube such as a 12au7 or 12at7 in the V1 or V2 Preamp slots of a JCM 800? What happened? I put an ECC82 in the V2 slot of my Class 5 (store only had one ECC83) and was very pleased with the result. Much more linear gain path. I'm thinking of trying the same with my 2204 to calm down the high input but I was wondering if anybody had ever tried that. My 800 has an old thrash mod on it so there is no headroom and loads of gain on tap.

Doing something like this will yeild different results in any amp. My 800 may react very different from yours. Only way to know is to try it in your amp, easy enough to do.

Thanks! And I know what you mean. I have heard that even when they were new, no two of the older Marshalls ever sounded the same. I would imagine that is only more true after 24 years.
