SL-X's with "tube logo" should have 5881 powertubes instead of EL34's.
That is, if the amp is still factory spec.

Some people have modded them totake EL34's.
So if you buy one of these amps, double check if the amp is or isn't modded.

P.S. not sure about the dates..

P.P.S. About checking to see if they are modded is just a safety precaution. It doesn't say anything about "what sounds best".
That is matter of taste...

Personally I like the 5881 tubes in it .. thats what makes the SL-X unique.
Having EL-34 in it just makes it sound like an 800/900 .. which isn't bad of course.

I bought a 50W SL-X when they came out in 1993 and it came with 5881 valves in it. I later had it modded to take EL 34´s. It was modded after the conversion manual you could get from Marshall at the time. That was actually for modding EL 34 amps to 5881 specs. But you could use it and work in reverse. There was no big difference in the sound i think. Now i got a 100W SL-X that has the 5881´s and it sounds great i think.
