In my opinion (as a 2204 owner) I would say go with the 50 watter. I know you don't get the low miss and thump from them as you do with a 100 watt, but the few 100 watt tube amps I have played have been almost unusable in the loudness department. Not that a 50 watt is that much quieter, but I feel that the volume is more usable. In my friends studio he has two 100 watt Peaveys (a VK100 and an old Deuce Classic). When I have jammed with him he has never gotten his volume off of two unless he just wanted to watch the windows flex. I couldn't dime the 2204 but I can open it up and let it breath a bit. I can still get nice-ish clean tones (as clean as a JCM 800 gets) that would be fine for a mic'd situation like a studio or mic'd gig and if I want a beefier lead tone I have an OD pedal I use as a booster that has a 100hz boost control to fatten the bottom end. Smoother, less raunchy tone as well. Cheaper to feed at retube time. For someone not playing arenas our outdoor concerts routinely I would say get the 50. Just a much more usable amp.
