Marshall jcm 900 SL-X same as Marshall jcm 900 High Gain

Are these two amps the same or does the SL-X have more gain/aggressiveness.

In a nutshell the SL-X is the most aggressive of any of the JCM amps with the exception of perhaps the DSL/TSL. It has more usable gain on tap then the 800 or the 900. All that gain however must be tempered as there becomes a fine line of turning the amp into sounding like mush.

I like the amp the best of the 800/900 range personally.

It´s a great amp. I used to have a 50Watter that i bought new in 1993. It to our surprize then came with 5881 valves. You could get a conversion manual from Marshall back then that really was for converting EL34 Marshalls to 5881 valves since they seem to have thought thought there shouldn´t be any more good EL34´s. You could use the manual the other way around to convert a 5881 equipped marshall to EL34´s. I also had (still have) a schematic for the SL-X that i got from Marshall when i visited the Marshall factory in the summer of 1993.
I had the change made from 5881´s to El34´s on the amp and it really didn´t make much difference. So on the 100Watter i bought used and have now i´ve kept the 5881´s. Maybe i´ll do a valve change later.
