2204 tone zone

Postby Julesman64 » 24 Jan 2010, 23:46

Been playing my '83 2204 plugged into the low sensitivity jack, master dimed, pre-amp about noon, with a fresh set of KT77's and couldn't be more pleased. Absolutely spot on tone, good bottom end, solid mids and sweet high's.

But the hi sensitivity jack is totally out of hand. Its at 3/4 volume even with the master at 2, and it's much too bright for my liking, even with the eq treble rolled back. Is this a typical characteristic of the JCM 800? It's quite the difference between the 2 jacks, with quite a bit less bottom end and mids in the High sensitivity. I'm still quite new to this amp and trying to get a feel for it.

Many easy mods can be made to the early 2204 to make it less bright. I would try a simple EQ first though, in most cases that would cure the brightness. Anyways the 2204 is a great amp I just fell out of love with the JCM800 tone years ago, but that is more because my playing style changed
