Those seems like good options.
I bought the American Vintage '62 a month ago, exaclty the same color as the one on your picture. It's a great guitar. The 5-way switch was in the case and I put it in directly of course. Too hard to balance the 3-way switch in the 2 and 4 positions :-)
I'm already thinking about re-fretting it with medium jumbo frets or similar. They don't need to be fatter, just higher. I find it a little to much work playing with my fingers down in the wood... bends especially. The neck actually is fatter than the standard C-shape, even if Fender calls it just "C-shape". I noticed this right away. I just looked at the specs for the Hot Rod and they call it "Thick C Shape". Might be a bit thicker. And the fretboard also have a 9.5" radius instead of the 7.25'' radius as on the American Vintage. Should minimize fret outs when bending.
I love the stock pups on mine. I think the only difference on the Hot Rod is the reversed polarity on the middle pickup (I might be wrong) which makes it hum free in the 2 and 4 positions.
I find my Strat as awesome as you found the Hot Rod I'm sure. You can really feel and hear the quality of the wood used. Great pieces of wood. My Strat is also very heavy. They must have chosen a really dense piece of Alder. It has incredible sustain.
