Which guitar from Santa this year???

Postby minerman » 07 Dec 2013, 21:44

Well, it's really from me, the "Warden" just gave the the green light for a new toy, & can't decide what to get....

Jackson DK2MQ Pro Dinky:
http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-JAC-2914102-521
Love the color, p'ups, locking trem, but I already have a Floyd-equipped guitar (my Ibanez)....

Gibson Les Paul Studio Pro 2014:
http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-GIB-LSTP-PB3CH1
Would be a great addition to my guitars, as I don't have a Les Paul-type, but, I've read they can be hit or miss for different players/people....

Kramer Pacer Classic:
http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-KRM-KPC-CRBF1
I've had a couple Kramers over the years, & they were great, don't know about the new ones though....Like the Jackson, love the locking trem & 2 humbuckers....

Fender Jim Root Tele:
http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-FEN-134444-706
One of the best guitars I've ever owned was a '94 Tele Plus II, this seems like it would be close to that, but dunno if I'd like the EMG's....

Epiphone Prophecy Les Paul Custom Plus GX:
http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-EPI-ENCH-HSGH1
Same as the Gibson IMO (having a LP-type guitar, not comparing Epi & Gibson) for a little less than the Gibson....

Epiphone Prophecy Les Paul Custom Plus EX:
http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-EPI-ENCH-MSBH1
Again, same as the Gibson & Epi, but don't know if I'd like the EMG's....I do love the way this guitar looks though...

Of course, I'd love to have 'em all, but in reality, that ain't gonna happen...If I were to pick one of the cheaper priced guitars, that might give me some "wiggle" room for something else, like another low-watt amp, another speaker cab or mics, or something....

Anyone had any experience with any of these guitars, the Epiphone Prophecy's in particular??? They look nice (I love the blue GX model looks, but don't know if I'd like the EMG p'ups...)...

This will be a "blind buy" too, I'm not gonna be able to play before I buy, but I could return the guitar if I didn't like it...

And, I'm in no hurry at all to buy, I'm gonna do some more digging/research before I pull the trigger on anything...

Any thoughts or suggestions from you guys???

If you're into the 2 humbucker with floyd you might look. Into a charvel they have the new SoCal and San dimas series made in Mexico they have dual humbuckers which are Seymour Duncan's and 1000 series floyd rose trems much better than the floyd "specials" I'd be leery of any guitar with one of those I've had them on guitars I bought and had to upgrade them the saddles are pot metal and won't clamp the string tight enough. Gibson are good but really a try before you buy. Prs makes killer single cuts and thier se line has consistent good quality those are both in your price range not to confuse you with more options but maybe something you hadn't thought of. Of the codices you put up I like the Jim root
Non Marshall's include 6505+, carvin quad x, fender champ, gen 1 flextone, orange tiny terror, fractal/atomic reactor 18, mesa f30
Scads of ibanez, bc rich, prs, and esp's

the Epi burst & that leaves you enough for the Audio Interfaces you were looking into or even some leftover cash if you go the Tascam A.I. route. :Thumbs

Of the ones listed I would go for the Jim Root..
I'm also getting myself something for Christmas in the not so expensive range.
Going to A/B test the PRS SE 24 Custom and the PRS Mike Akerfeldt sign, it will be one of them I think.

I play Gibson Les Paul's exclusively, I guess you know what I would suggest.
Many Marshall's, and I want more.

minerman, considering you don't have a "Les Paul type" give another look at the Gibson Les Paul Studio Pro 2014. Would be helpful if you could go to a retailor to play a similar Les Paul. Let us know what you decide.

stay away from the Kramer; not the guitar of the past. I had a Pacer and Baratta decades ago killer guitars; today its a cheaper version made in chinese factories ....

Like the others that Fender looks the best on this list. While I love my Gibsons not too excited about the 14 offerings, maybe a used LP instead?

Have you checked out the MIM Fender telecasters with active pups, stacked tone knobs.
There's a new music instrument store by my house, specializing in very nice guitars and amps.
He grabbed a custom built strat, and this MIM Tele.
The pups in the tele sounded good, very hot. What I like about it.. I could back em down , then adjust the bass knob, treble knob(stacked) and get quite a variety of good tones.. From country spank, to warm mid woman tones.

I liked it so much, I'm going to buy one after the holidays are over.

I like the Jackson Dinkys, and the PRS guitars are a good choice.

I'm going with a Gibson guys, I know the Epiphone's are probably really good guitars, but, if I bought a $5,000 Epi LP, I'd still want it to say "Gibson" on the headstock....I had one years ago, sold it, & have always wanted another one since I started back playing about 5 years ago...Now, the quest for the right one is probably gonna take a little time, but, again, I've decided on a Gibson LP....

On the Kramer, I had a couple really nice ones back in the day too, the last one I had was an original Nightswan, & like all my gear I had, sold it for peanuts....I've read back/forth about the quality of the new Kramers, but I'm pretty skeptical really, but, it won't matter for a while, as I'm hoping to have the new LP by the time I go on my mini-vacation starting the 21st of this month.....

Thanks for all the suggestions/help guys, to be honest, I'd love to have 'em all (especially the LP & Jim Root tele), but being a poor, broke bastard most of the time, I'll have to settle for one at a time for now....

I'll let you guys know the exact model I choose, as I'm still gonna do some searching/looking, but again, going with a Gibson... :bgrin
