What is the best solution for Scratchy Volume pots?

Postby Slashwannabe1 » 03 Dec 2009, 13:20

Being VM owners and Users (as we all probably are in here?) I'm sure everyone of you understands the importance of your guitars volume pot when using it with the VM.

I've had scratchy pots off and on through the years and electronic lube is not always handy. I've been talking to some people and they suggest a drop of motor oil will cure scratchy pots, is this true? also does anyone have any other methods they employ that work well?

Thanks.

I wouldn't want motor oil anywhere near one of my guitars. :scared

I always use contact cleaner "with" lubricant for my pots and it always works well. I also keep my guitars in their case when not in use and this cuts down on the dust/dirt etc. to begin with. If I had a pot that I just could not get to clear up, then I would replace it. :Thumbs

Yeah - the contact cleaner/lube is the only stuff to use but it won't stop your pots picking up more dirt later - you gotta do it regular. I give mine a squirt every time I change strings - takes two minutes - never had a problem.

Why don't you just replace it with new one? :crazy

I'm with Tony here. Replace it, they're cheap and you can probably get a better one than the stock one you now have.

I don't disagree if they are cheap ones now but if they are a good quality no reason to replace something that can be fixed. Many times a scratchy pot or bad switch just needs 5 minutes of love to bring it back to working order.

Yeah my pots work and feel good, its just an occasional scratch that isn't always there that i want to eliminate.

DeOxit is just what they said. Worth it and much less hassle than replacing pots. Used it many times on OLD stuff. No new pots needed yet.

they sell small spray bottles of the deox that'll fit in the cubby hole in your guitar case. Or if its a gig at a venue, the sound or lighting guys are sure to have some =P
