JTM100 dimed

Postby pleximaster » 17 Aug 2012, 10:29

Posted this on the Marshall Amp forum but post it here as well...

Someone asked me how much gain you can expect from a JTM100. This is my mid 67 black flag. It was modified when I got it but it it is restored with vintage parts. It has a lot more gain then the JTM45 and is closer to the "later" plexis with EL34.

This was unfortunately recorded with an Iphone, in the adjasent room. Les Paul straight in volume rolled it in the beginning. Hotplate used -8dB

two old basketweave cabs. Channels jumped all EQ on ten, into Loudness 1 on 10, Loudness 2 on 1,5 It has a lot gain but most of it is from volume.

Edit:

It is a super bass however I added a bright cap but since it is dimed I don´t think it matter much. I have other wise tried to put in "correct" values and parts from an old doner 66 amp. Look at the board if there is something "gainier" I can check the values for you. The amp had a major mod before I got it so I cant speak for how it sounded when it left the shop...

Transformers and powerstage are untouched i think

It puts out a hell of a lot more than 100watts, loud as h@ll

the hotplate adds a but of gain but I have to us it or I might burn some speakers... rather burn a hot plate (burned three already)

It is a very fat sounding amp, it is really cool to plya by it self but in a band it either kills the bass and drums or at lower volumes drown in the deep frequencies. I much rather preffer the later plexis with more mids and hights

I think when these 100 watt JTMs first came out it really changed the style for many guitar players who could get one. That tone is flat nasty, while still sounding clean there is a lot of natural distortion. I wouldn't ever sell that, those old transformers were very good.
