Which Marshalls are the reissues based on?

Postby ClassicRock88 » 27 Sep 2013, 05:56

So I know that in the early days there wasn't a "Marshall Plexi". The circuit changed as often as from amp to amp, as I understand it, with different resistor values and occasional wiring changes. I also know that many of the clones out there are clones of a particular amp. Take, for instance, the Metropoulis 12,000 series. Isn't is a clone of a certain '68? Or Greg Germino's SLV55 is supposed to be a clone of a very sweet sounding 50 watter.

Does anybody know if there was a particular amp that Marshall based their vintage series reissues off of? Or did they just look back at their general schematics that they had, take which values and schemes were the most common and say, "THIS is the '68 Super Lead circuit"?

I don't think it is as complicated as that. They used the best components available today to reproduce "the sound" rather then to chase a specific version of the amp.

So in this case the ear of the design engineer is what is key.

Now for the design of the 1 watt Marshall's there were specific amps that were in the possession or available to the engineers that were used. For instance the JCM1 was modeled after James Marchants personal JCM 800 Combo he gigs and the Silver Jubilee.
