JMP-1 to trigger lights

Postby Arek » 23 Aug 2014, 08:58

My band uses Obey40 to control lights on stage.
It has MIDI IN and OUT.

Is there a way to connect JMP-1 to Obey40 and program it so that when switching between the channels changes lights?
Specifically when hitting button 4 on footcontroller to trigger spot light.
There is likely a way to switch the Scenes or Chases with MIDI using Obey40, but that's not what I am after. I don't want my action to interfere with the rest of the light show.

Alternativelly are there any MIDI controlled lights on the market? Or MIDI to DMX converters that could be used for that purpose that are easy on the wallet?
Same idea: I hit footswitch 4 and it turns on the spot light and when hitting footswitch 3, or 2, or 1 it turns the spot light off (or triggers different program).

By the way JMP is connected to Lexicon MX200, so the MIDI cable could be going either from JPM or from MX200 if that makes a difference.

Hello Arek,
I think it's possible but not as easy as connect midi cable between your JMP-1 and your Light Panel Brain.
I'm in process to build just that for my Vintage Modern rig.

Actually I already built the prototype and it works perectly fine. My prototype is small light panel with 5 lights.
Blue light for LDR, Purple for HDR, Red for delay, Green for extra gain end Yellow for distortion pedal.

I connected a microcontroller between my switch board and light panel. Every time I switch something the signal goes to microcontroller too.
The microcontroller is programmed to switch corespondive light when signal from switch board is received.
My controller is very cheep, it's integrated in Arduino Uno board. I paid $12 for it.
It's pretty easy to program and software is free.

Arduino is an open-source electronics platform based on easy-to-use hardware and software.
It's intended for anyone making interactive projects.

Thanks for suggestion.
I came across Arduino, but it seems like it requires another board called Tinkerkit.
At this price I may get them and start screwing around.
I'll be going to my local light guru today (Rob at AxeMusic is the best) to get some advice, and if we come up with something I will post the answers here.

It would be so easy if there was just a LED spot light with MIDI input that could be plugged into the amp's MIDI and you would just have to select the colors to be triggered with different channels. I really hate playing solo while some strobe lights are on, or when it gets completely dark.
Have already put glow in the dark and neon stickers on the fretboard, but then I am catching them with my fingers when pulling up the strings. It is bearable, but annoying.

No big deal. It is one of those "nice to have" luxury rather than "must have" things.

I wonder if you went on to do this actually. I was curious about my arduino idea and tried it myself.
It works just fine. I didn't use TinkerKit with Arduino. I used cheap relay board from China. It costs $4.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Arduino-Shi ... 3cf136ddb6

Now my Vintage modern switches stage lights (220 V AC, 10 Amper through each relay)
I have even matched the colours so when in LDR it switches blue lights ON, when in HDR it goes purple.
I used green, red and yellow lights for boost, delay and lead.
Very funny. I should probably make another video.

I got all confused with info on the net (does not take much ;-).
If yours works OK, would you be able to send me or publish some pictures?
Maybe even step by step instruction?

I brought my amp home while the light panel was left in rehearsal studio.
But I can make som sketches for you tomorrow.
Do you know how to use Arduino to control leds?

Just looking at the board (that I bought just now using link from you), it seems that I attach the power to the blue relays that act as a simple switch when they receive signal from input.

...but how do they read MIDI signals from JMP MIDI out? (or from 11R)
MIDI uses only two cables to transmit the signals.

...or to answer your question: presume I don't know anything about Arudino, but can solder etc.

You're correct regarding relay card!

I don't have jmp1 but doesn't it have some leds on it, or what about lexicon mx200?

leds?
You mean LED lights?
or 1/4" jacks that could be used to plug in single footswitch to control parameter?

I think, that I know where you're going with this.
The LEDs come on when channels switch.
I can piggyback to LED through Arudino inputs to control relay that will turn on and off the light.

Is that it?

That's genius!
Did you come up with it yourself? You deserve Nobel Prize for simplicity.

Thanks a bunch. That idea may open other doors to more tweaking. Damn you! ;-)

Once I get the Randall RF4 (already on order) and Arudino board from Australia, I will put it together.

Yes the idea hit me actually when you started this thread. So I had to try it. It worked like a charm.

Lets say your measure 2V at your positive LED side (when it's on).
Arduino can turn that signal into 5V which is enough to turn your relay ON. (if the voltage by LED is 5V, then you don't even need Arduino)
Your relay card should have a power supply of it's own so it wouldnt draw current from Arduino.
Remember to ground your device, Arduino and Relay power supply together. It's very important.

The program very is easy:

void setup()//starts serial connection
{
pinMode(3,INPUT);// here is where you connect signal from your LED
pinMode(6,OUTPUT); //here is where you connect Relay
}
void loop()
{
int sensorVal3 = digitalRead(3); //reads the input3 value into a variable

if (sensorVal3 == HIGH) // sets condition
{
digitalWrite(6, HIGH);// Relay turns ON

}
else
{
digitalWrite(6, LOW); //Relay OFF
}

You just need to add few more inputs and outputs if you're gonna use several relays.
