What did I just buy??

Postby thunderkyss » 09 Jan 2011, 09:37

From another thread.........
mety wrote:I've never heard of stock KT66s in the MkII Master Volumes either. I've had a couple over the years and they came with EL34s.
In fact I still have one now.
It may be a good idea to get the amp fully checked out as other components may have been "tinkered with" over the years. I'm sure you friend has already considered this.

BTW which model is it? 2203, 2204 etc...
How does it sound? It may be great with the 66s!
A good score for free, anyway you look at it. :Thumbs

I actually prefer these amps to the later JCM800s as they don't seem to have the awful ice-pick treble that the 800s have.

So my question is, are all MkII Master Volumes 2204/2203s??

I bought this off eBAy... impulse buy.

But it doesn't say MkII Lead anywhere on it. It has the metal toggle switches, & not the plastic rockers. Then the case it is in covers up the J in JMP.

Still happy with the buy, I was wanting an early 2204. Can't wait to get it... but I'm so confused.

This is actually really interesting.

It looks like 2204 in the right cab, but I've never seen a faceplate like that. Usually those had rocker switches. I would assume that this was extremely early because of the switches and indicator, but I thought the early ones had 4 inputs. Ive also never seen the serial on the front. Its possible they updated the box before the faceplate and that is why the J is cut off.

That's my first impression as well.

Thanks for the reply.

from the faceplate and the board it looks to be a 2203.
As far as kt66's.. heres my 2 cents. My friend has a 2203 similar to the one in the pics. 2203s in the 70's maybe even 80's were shipped with 6550s to the usa b/c of el34 reliability problems during shipping. Anyways, my friends amp had groove tube power tubes that said they were 6l6c and in parentheses below that it said AKA kt66/5881.

Also, if you look in the ebay pics at the pic of the fuse holder on the back panel, You can see what looks to say 2204 stamped in the little black box above the fuse holder. The wiring and wire routing/colors look correct too for a marshall of that era

Are 2204s & Mk II Super Leads the same thing?[/quote]
hmm, not 100% sure. There are so many slight variations and names from the 1959/plexi/superlead/master volume mkII that its hard to tell for me b/c I am not a super expert.

I do know this though, The first gain stage of the amp will tell you for sure.

A two input s/l is usually something like this

First gain stage 820/220 or 330 2nd gain stage 2.7k/.68

A 2203/4 jcm 800 is 2.7k/.67 and 10k.

A 2203/4 and a superlead are very very similar component and wiring wise. Just a few changes here and there. I will take a closer look a t the board picks and see if i can verify any of the component values

ok, that first resistor (brown, black, orange) is a 10k
THe second one is 2.7k (red purple orange)

The red "lego cap inbetween them is a .68 that is in series with the 2.7k.

That amp is a 2204 and according to the last letter of the s/n (04478M)
The M states the amp was built in 1980

The bias splitter resistors look to be 220k also meaning that this amp was made for shipment in uk and should be running el34's.

It's a CSA/Canadian-market Marshall, because of the metal toggle switches, extra fuses on the inside, and lack of a 16 ohm tap.

I liked the metal toggles on my JCM800, very sturdy-feeling and gave the impression you were switching on a big, brawny old beast.

Nice score! :Cheers

Thanks..... blind pig & acorns you know.

It's my second Marshall. I also own a 2466.... but I wanted to get into the JCM 800s. Probably should have done more research, but I saw that one, less money than I thought I was going to need to get into an early JCM ( I hear the early JCM 800s & late model JMPs are identical).

So I'm glad you guys approve.

:bgrin :bgrin Well, I did know it off the top of my head, now, but I googled it about a year and a half ago, looking for more info about my CSA JCM800 2204. LegendaryTones.com is good for these types of things, great site.
