1984 JMP?!

Postby Mats A » 28 Apr 2015, 21:51

There is a 1984 JMP 50W redone in white vinyl for sale here. The seller says it has the letter R and that this means 1984. But as far as i know R stands for 1983. There must be something that is not correct since Matshall started making the JCM 800 look in 1981. As far as i know there was still some years before they made their first Reissue of that amp.

Definitely agree with you on the 'R' in the serial no. for 1983. Michael Doyle's book confirms.
I suppose an amp could sit in a store for a while and be sold in 1984 with an 83 serial no.?

The amp gets it's serial number when it's made. Not sold.

Sorry Mats, that's what I meant. Made in 83 and given an 83 serial no. and then sat on a store's shelf till 84 when it is bought and a customer is given a 1984 dated reciept.

He bought it used. There is no JMPs after 1981. They became JCM 800. You can't fit a JCM 800 chassis in a JMP box because of the different placing of the Power and Standby switches.

The letters in the serial skipped a letter in the sequence at one point too.

Ive seen 1983' JMP's before.

Not sure what your situation is tho ... :chick

You mean they made 2204 amps looking like JMP's in 1983? As they were making the JCM 800 series? They have skipped more than one letter.

1984 JMP?!

Postby Mats A » 01 May 2015, 07:47

The letter R stands for 1983 that is certain. According to the seller the guy he bought it from said it was a 1980. But this seller says it has the letter R. But Marshall changed the look to the JCM 800 Series in 1981 so why make smaller panel JMP amps in 1983?
