Opinions on MG Carbon Fibre series?

Postby noise5150 » 16 Oct 2015, 22:18

I'm thinking about picking up a used MG50CFX (relatively cheaply) as a secondary amp to my DSL40c and I was wondering if anyone owns one or has played through these amps for longer than 5 minutes at guitar center. I had the old MG100dfx and I sold it a few years back. I just want to make sure these are a significant improvement over those.

I have the MG Carbon Fibre series in complete. Really good Practise Amps and very good for smaller Gigs.
They sound very good and have all Effects on board. It´s not the same as a Tube Amp, but a cheap compromise. I use the 50 Watt version in my Kitchen and the 15 Watt in my Bedroom. All in all, a good little
Transistor Amp for all styles.

I have a silver MG stack.

As Sigi said they are great for practice but there is no reason you cannot gig one either. Most snobs will turn their head at them but for the money I think they are a lot of fun, cleans and heavy distortion with effects its all in there.

Thanks for the input guys. Do you know if they are an improvement over the other series tone-wise? I had an older MG series combo and I know there was an MG series in between.

Alternatively blackstar have the ht1r and ht5r which are in the same price range and reall rock, full valves tone...
Or there are still old valvestate amps on the used market which tonewise were better than the mg series in my opinion... But then again you get effects with the mg...

As usual a nice part of your collection.

I really like the looks of the one on the bottom left.
Looks like a mini bluesbreaker, what model is that one?

With Blackstar, you have to get used to that "dark" sound they have. It's hard to describe. I have a HT-20 head and a LT Dual pedal, and they have that distinctive Blackstar voicing. It's not a bad sound, just different...
