JTM 100 Super PA

Postby kissfanps » 10 Mar 2009, 12:15

So I was checking out some Free videos on youtube and noticed that Paul Kossoff was playing through a Marshall that I had never seen before. It had 8 knobs and 8 inputs. After doing some research, I found that it was a JTM 100 Super PA with KT66s! I was wondering if anyone knows what these are? I read somewhere that it was superlead and superbass combined, but who knows.

Anyway, I am very pumped to hear that Paul was playing with KT66s (it appears he used the Super PAs, Superbass, and Supertrem from before the switch to EL34s). Would the VM or the Super 100JH get closer to his sound?

On a side note (and in keeping with the "Free" theme), I heard a rumor that Bad Co. and the Doobie Brothers are touring together. Simon Kirke happens to be a good friend and I help him out here and there with his protools system. I may be heading to his place sometime this week to take a guitar lesson and jam a bit, so I will ask if the rumors are true.

So...what the heck is a Super PA???? :please

A Super PA is basically a standard Marshall NMV head with four volume controls instead of two. The amp will have an additional two preamp stages in parallel with the standard two, and they are re-EQ'd a bit for PA use. Other than the preamp differences, they are exactly like Super Leads. These are supposed to make excellent guitar amps, and can easily be changed to Super Lead specs with just a few component changes.

Bad Company with Paul Rogers? I saw them when they did the anthology tour and it was awesome. Really not the same without him.

I hope so!!! I will let you all know when I find out from Simon. I know they did a show in August - Paul, Simon, and Mick!

Thanks for all the input on the Super PA guys.

Here's a JTM100 Super PA dual OT probably from Nov. 1965, and one of the first 100w Marshalls made.
This is also the original version of the 40th anniversary JTM-45/100 amps.

Might need a bit of TLC but that would be one sweet amp!

Tommy Rocco from Meco used one back in the 70's
amp got some killer sounds, but had to be LOUD to get nice and crunchy
Wish I had bought it off him back when I had the chance.
I have seen a few that were modded and ganged, and they got some KILLER distortion while keeping a nice vintage sound
then again, we have the VM so I guess all is good
