1987X VS. JTM45?

Postby Green » 19 Aug 2009, 08:34

I´ve been looking around for a Marshall 1987X RI or a JTM45 RI. I´ve never played one of them but listened to clips on the net.
I got a VM 2266 with a 2X12 (Vintage30) and the LDR are as I understand pretty much a JTM45.
Does anyone have any experience with the two reissues and can compare them, are they much different to eachother?
My goal is to maby play the 2266 and one reissue in stereo or have one set for cleaner tones and one for dirty stuff, don´t know yet!

Me and my band plays heavy blues to vintage hardrock type of music if that can help.

Glad for some answers!!!

The 1987 is going to have more gain than the JTM45. It depends on which one you want to make your clean amp too. If you make your VM the clean amp, then go with a 1987 to have more gain, or vice versa. Probably would be better to make the VM the dirty amp and go with a JTM or 1987 for cleans. Have you looked at http://www.metroamp.com for a clone of a 1987 or JTM45? They are amazing! :ntworth

I've had both the reissues and clones. Both fantastic amps. I'd recommend playing both. The JTM45 has the tube rectifier with a significant amount of sag with the higher gain settings. For your type of music, it may be just the ticket. I'm partial to the solid state rectifier and ended up with the 2061 after going through a bunch of different heads. Still loud, but a little more manageable volume-wise. The JTM's aren't (insanely) loud (compared to the 1987's), but plenty loud for any gig I'd ever play. Both of your choices really start to sing when they open up at higher volumes. Good luck!!
