MIDI

Postby Arek » 17 Jul 2012, 10:29

I got myself Behringer FCB1010.
All that MIDI stuff seems owerwhelming and underdocumented.

Anybody has done it?
Hints?
Step by step instructions?

I have ordered UnO 1.3 already.
Should be getting it from states in about a week.

There used to be a program that made setting up the FCB1010 easy (without having to do the "to store you're setting, push the 5 & up button simultaneously while juggling 3 small oranges & facing Mecca") - I haven't used mine for 7-8 years, so can't help ya with the name....

However, on the JMD it's more a case of dial up your sound, hit the footswitch/midi program button twice, then hit the button for the patch number on the FCB1010 you want to save that patch at (it stores that info in the amp NOT in the pedal). The bad news is there's no use for the expression pedals with the JMD

I hooked it up today.
It is all working OK, that means, I can switch the presets and store them as I like.

The expression pedals are a waste of space thou.
Can't program them for wah.
I am considering taking apart one of the CryBaby's and installing it into the controller.

Probably better to get different controller without the expression pedals, or cut the expression pedals off, then mount it on my pedalboard with wah, tuner, and wireless unit.

Another project.......................here I come.....

Any other suggestions?
(I am a bit affraid asking that question ;-)

First question: what do you want to control with it?
Second question: Is this for live or home use?

After some research I have decided to sell the FCB1010.
Looks like pedals are useless so why carry the extra weight etc.

I also have Boss GT10, and with some spare time will look into getting ity to work together with JMD.

Any tips on how to hook it up?
What options as far as controll are possible?

Haven't played with the GT10 yet, but have been programming some other Midi equipment to work with the JMD. (TC G Force, and G Major). Anyhow 2 items came up pretty quick with the Midi. The JMD only operates in Omni mode, so you can't assign it a specific midi channel to listen on,, different than your other MIDI devices. Wound up having to save patch #s in the rack fx processor to directly match the patches #'s I have saved in the JMD. Otherwise a lot of extra MIDI mapping involved.
The JMD dosen't accept CC commands so will ignore them. I think the Gt10 will take some CC commands, so that leaves you options to what you can control with the Gt10, or use expression pedals with etc. I'm sure there's some others here with a little more midi experience that can chime in though.

I'm thinking about ordering the Rocktron Midi Raider controller, just for the fact that it has a lot of layout options with button assignments. Specifically I like the abitlity to have 5 CC command buttons while still having 10 PC (patch) command buttons on the same layout,,,, without having to change banks, scroll, etc.
Let us know how the GT10 works out !

Re: MIDI // JMD1 tones!!

Postby bonedaddio » 26 Aug 2012, 22:35

Oddly enough, I just decided not to use an FCB1010 I have. Too big, bulky, and the expression pedals won't work with the JMD1... I considered amputation, but it's really too much work for what I'd have. If I didn't have a couple of other midi pedals lying around, I'd probably look at the Rolls Midi Buddy for around $130. I'm going to use an ADA MXC pedal (my garage is kind of a wierd repository of music odds n ends) but I'll be replacing the switches (they're like red plastic door bell switches) with new ones from "Bitches Love My Switches". Great pricing.
If you use the editor software, the FCB1010 is really capable, you can have more than one Midi command/program change command layered on a switch... but if I wanted to go that "racky" I'd of kept my ADA MP1 and added something newer.

Although I've only had the JMD1 a short time, I'm pretty sure I can get what I need out of it. What unbelievable tones this amp creates, effortlessly, and how organic it is in terms of dynamic response; the way it will clean up on the guitar volume control (although that's going to force me to use a volume pedal in the effects loop); and the way leads just pick up a note or harmonic and sing/feedback!! Damn!!
Marshall Haze 40 watt, JMD102 "mutant" Combo, JMD1 100 watt head, 1960A Marshall Cabinet, Pre-CBS Fender Bassman Cabinet, "mutated"
Pedals, peddles, puddles, no poodles.
2010 Les Paul Pro Standard, 1994 PRS CE Bolt-on, 1964 Gibson "Les" G, 2011 PRS "Batcaster", etc. etc.

I like using the FCB1010 in live situations for the same reason that many of you seem to dislike it: because it's so large.

At home, where lighting and other conditions are optimal, a small MIDI board like the Rolls MidiBuddy is fine. But onstage, with flashing lights (or none at all at the most inopportune moment), it's really easy to step on the wrong button (or two at once) because the buttons are so close together.

With the larger FCB1010 the buttons are spaced significantly further apart, minimizing embarrassing missteps during the gig.

Send me your unwanted FCB1010s. :howdy

Here's what I THINK I'll be using live on a pedal board.
The ADA MXC has now got the new switches installed, and works quite nicely.
On the other hand, I do agree about the FCB1010 switches being farther apart... I'm not just not sure I want to take it apart and mod it so I can cut it down to get rid of the extra/useless foot controllers, move the circuit board and connectors over & so forth over, make the holes for the connections, or whatever else I need to do... really, I just want to play my damn guitar.

I had to have a new wood box built for my JMD102... that's almost done and ready to cover with the tolex, etc. Sigh. I'll post the pics for all that too, eventually, starting with the destroyed MDF original cabinet. Time consuming and costly, but I really do like how this amp sounds more and more every time I fool with it. Since this JMD foot controller was in the bottom of the original box, it got crunched too, and I had to take it apart and straighten the side metal out, repair the jack, etc. I will say, these Marshall JMD foot controllers are made out of some heavy steel, and are apparently quite tough.
