jmd102 changing speakers to vintage 30s

Postby shenny » 28 Sep 2012, 13:32

HI,
hey JMD lovers, have question regarding swapping out the speaker of my jmd102 to vintage 30s?
first is that is it even possible ?
how do you match the ohms?
and the original speakers and the v30s have complete different wattage, will there be an output difference?
have any of you guys already tried it and if so how do you like them?
what will be the basic steps to DIY?

thanks guys im really looking forward for replays, opinions and absolutely any critic regarding this topic.

Changing out the stock speakers in the JMD1 to Vin30s is a nice upgrade. Look on the back of the stock speakers in there and look for the ohm rating on the speaker, only buy the same ohm speakers as the stock ones. I assume they are 2 - 8 ohm speakers in there wired in series for 16 ohms.

Replace using the same ohm speaker and wire it back exactly how you unwired it. That is all really. The Vin30s are going to sound more pronounced then the stock speakers which I think you will like.

The JMD102 has a Celestion 12-AX75 and a Celestion G12-70MD both are 16 ohm and wired in parallel. I have been wanting to do this upgrade myself. Let us know how it sounds if you do this mod.

krapatkossoff my friend, i am already on it on my second JMD102 . i got the speakers from musician friends yesterday im just trying wire these but i have to drill extra holes to mount the speakers since it a little bit different overall everything seems to be fine. ill let you know right away as soon as im done, also ill try to post a recording how it sounds like.

my only concern is why they put two different voicing speakers as stock.

Those stock speaker are not bad, but they are not Vin30s either. I am sure you noticed immediately much more mids and clearer highs. I bet they're louder also. Glad they worked out for you.

Marshall mixes speakers just like many of us players do, it can give you both Ying and Yang. If you ever want to mix the JMD1 trade someone one of the Vin30s for a G12H-30, those compliment the Vin30s very well.

V30s are a great speakers and i have tried them as well as other celestion speakers, but i have never had to drill any holes, all celestion speakers i have had are a straight swap, so what was different with yours !!! are they celestion !!!

An alternative to the G12H-30 is a Eminence Wizard, which is a higher power G12 copy. I have a Wizard and a V30 in a closed back 2x12 cab, and it kills with the JMD. It sounds terrific with all of the models, but clean tones are unreal. This cab and a JMD head has the best clean tone I've ever gotten in all my years of playing.

Yeah im 100% positive , the problem was the srew holes didnt match with the original . For some reason they were located about 3 inchs away from the orginal circumferance . And your right i have an alnico gold and it matchs up with the orginal speaker , i dunno why this was different .

+1 on the Celestion V30's. I play my JMD with Mesa Boogie cabs loaded with the V30s. Pretty punchy, powerful, loud and all the grit you'll ever need. I have not tried other speakers but am firmly in the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mindset with these.
JMD:1 50W head (in the past: Marshall VM 2266/DSL 50/Mesa Boogie Stiletto/Dual Rec/Electra Dyne/Vox Night Train), Mesa Boogie V-30 Roadster cabs, Barber Tone Press, Eventide Timefactor, Nebula Mojohand Phaser, Xotic RC, Rocktron Talkbox, Guitars (1958 Historic Reissue Wildwood Spec LP, Custom Shop ES-335, Custom Shop LP Jr., Amer Deluxe Tele, '57 Reissue Strat, HSS Strat, Martin DC-16RGTE, Taylor 355CE 12 string, Godin A8 & Kentucky KM-1000 mandolins, Pono ukulele, Gold Tone PBS Resonator).

I have my JMD50 head going through my Avatar 2x12 with V30s. Prob the best overall speaker I've played through.

I really don't think there's a bad speaker choice for the JMD. Just a matter of tone your prefer.
I started out with a combination of a V30 and G12H30 and really liked it. After awhile I thought it sounded too bright on the top end for my taste with this amp, so went to just V30's.
A/B'd a few more and wound up liking a combination of a V30 with an eminence tonespotter(G12-65 clone).
Keep hearing about the Classic Lead 80's but haven't tried those yet.

I was actually going to sell my JMD102, but couldn't go through with it. Instead I dropped in 2 V30s this weekend and LOVE the way the amp sounds now. Much more pronounced and articulate. So glad I kept it and went this route.

And I had no issues with the speaker hole alignment issue noted above....although it is damn tight getting speakers in and out of the cab, or maybe I have big hands lol :Jerkoff

Coincidence this thread popped up again! I just picked up a used 1960AV off Craigslist last night. It's encouraging to hear all the positive comments on the V30's matched with the JMD! I can't wait to plug in tonight, It was too late by the time I got home last night. Kids were already in bed. It did sound great with my Class 5 at his house though!
