What speaker cab to buy

Postby loupy31 » 29 Jul 2013, 19:48

Hi All,
OK, My wife has said I can get another cab for my amp (JMD 100W).

After recovering from the shock, I have to decided, I am currently using an Orange 2 x 12 closed back cab with V 30's,
would I be better off with a Marshall 1960AV which has 4 V 30's or get another orange cab same as the one I have and just stack them...................................

I'd say get the Marshall. IMO a 4x12 sounds a lot better than 2 2x12 cabs.

The JMD1 can make any quality cabinet sound good, I would shoot for a greenback cabinet such as the 1960BX. Be aware that you may not be able to run that 2x12 with your new 4x12. You will need to make sure of your ohms. Marshall 4x12 cabinets are 16ohms so your Orange cabinet would also need to be 16 ohms to run it together.

Thats a tough call , but I would go for the 1960 cab just for the classic look with your JMD . If your keeping your orange cab , you have both options .
I know it's only rock and roll , but I like it .

I am loving my jmd1 through a 412 with greenbacks. Cant go wrong with that. I also have a 212 with v30s in it, but I leave that home and the 412 stays at rehearsal. They both sound great but the 412 wins hands down.

FWIW, whatever cab you buy, be careful that the speakers you get are not really bright, as the JMD is much brighter sounding than many Marshalls. I have to have the presence on mine around 2 or 0 when used with my 2X12 V30/Wizard cab, where my Vintage Modern can have the presence on 5-6. And I cannot use the JMD at all with my 4X12 cab, which has non-broken in Weber reconed creambacks. It would probably sound great once I break the creambacks in.

+1
Had the same experience. Finally swapped out the Wizard/G12H30 for a few others (CL80, G1265, and another V30). All sounded better on the high end than the G12H30......
