Preamp 12 or Mode Four with an El34 power section. Anyone?

Postby V-Type » 15 Mar 2014, 07:03

I find my JMD1 50 so much fun.
The Marshall tones just truly abound.
Now that I have plopped my MXR wall wart powered 10 band eq in the loop I find that the amount of tones possible is staggering.

I wanted a good Godsmack type patch but figured it wouldnt sound like my Boogie does.
Wrong. Preamp 12 The Gain crazy Mode Four model in the "overdrive" section does all kinds of Higher Gained flavors.
It sweeps around nicely and retains the mid bite which a lot of amps dont.
Watch the bass on the amp but v curve the looped active EQ = Wow.

Any heavy gained folks find the MF pleasing.
Btw it works well as a crunch and dirty, dark clean as well.

It's not my favorite preamp , but it's fun to play around with . I can always tell when my son has been playing with my amp because he leaves it on #12 .
I know it's only rock and roll , but I like it .

What style is he after I would ask.
If he likes a Moderny Heavy Gained tone similar too what say Boogie,5150.Engl,etc..brings I would think the
#12 MF preamp with a Marshall El34 power push may be the ticket.
I wasnt a huge fan of the original Mode Four but the tube "squish" and "ommph" that the original lacks is really pleasing
otherwise in the JMD1 model.
Again if you like a dark,Gain staged tone this may be a fun preamp too play with.
Just loves 2x12 V30 cab btw.

V-Type,
Id like to try that Godsmack tone. What EQ settings are you using on your amp? On your EQ? The metalhead in my band always says Im too middy for our modern stuff but if I really scoop the mids I dont like the overall tone. Im more of a 70's, 80's rock guy so i have those tones nailed. Im assuming your using HB's?
