DSL or no?..

Postby JSO » 03 Jan 2015, 19:39

I've had my JMD 50 head for 3 years now. I love it. However, I find I have settled in on the DSL preamps. I use preamp 2 for cleans and 15 for my crunch and lead tones. I have found some great tones using my SG standard. My question is for DSL owners. Would it be worth it to buy the DSL? Specifically, how close do the JMD and DSL sound to each other? I am very interested in any insights from owners of both amps. Thanks in advance.

You are going to be able to tweak and fine tune the JMD1 to your guitar far more than you could on a DSL. There would be really no reason to purchase a DSL if you are already getting that tone from the JMD1. A better option would be to get a second amp to fill the void of what the JMD1 cannot do.

A JTM45 with KT66s or a Vintage Modern with KT66s would be an example of two of those amps. Personally if the JMD1 were my only amp I would look into a Marshall 1987 to get that Plexi sound.

I have both the new DSL100H and a JCM2000 also both 50 and 100 watt JMD-1.
For pure power and tight Lows the DSL100H comes out on top. I have the stock EL34s and a strange
mix of preamp tubes all new no NOS tubes Dougs Tubes hooked me up. The JCM 2000 has many mods but still falls a little short of the sweet mids I look for in an amp. I am still looking for the right mix of tubes for that amp. My JMD 50 head has a few mods also the 100 is still stock. I love all my kids even the 900. If you buy one used I think you will love it. I would get the DSL100H before the 2000. most people try the same settings with the 100H the use with the 2000 that's not the way to go let your ears guide you.
