JMD & VM - both thru one 4x12 Cab

Postby jeb77 » 22 Mar 2016, 17:08

Hi, I have the JMD:1 50 watt head and the 1960A Lead Cab 4x G12T-75watt.
Im looking at buying a Vintage Modern 100 watt head and 425A cab to use in their own right - but also occurs to me the possibility for using the two heads together!

Question - can i put the JMD and VM heads both thru the 1960A cab, using the stereo switch on the cab and the 8 ohm outs on the heads - would be 8 ohm each side from the two heads.
Would be able to get a nice blend of different sounds from the two heads thru one cab!

Question 2 - could i run both heads into a 425A - the jmd is 50watt and the VM is 100 watt - so thats prob way over powering the 4 x 25 watt speakers?

i realise the VM sounds best thru the 425A - G12C.

either way, im thinking the VM and 425A will be a good addition to add to my collection.

thanks for your input

Question 1 is a yes, just as you stated, number 2 will work up to a point, the G12C are only rated at 25 watts, so if you go too loud with the 100 watt VM you could blow them.

You could run the VM with the JMD1 in stereo into the same cabinet assuming the cab has enough watts. Would make for some interesting sound combinations.

The VM is not as loud as some Marshalls like a Plexi or 800 and its sound is less harsh on the ears.

The 2466 is 72 watts in LDR and 100 watts in HDR.

2-12C are conservatively rated at 25 watts each 2 at 50.

You should be able to safely run the VM in LDR at Master on 7 and in HDR 5.

I am sure there may be variables like if you run an overdrive pedal to boost signal, what tubes in preamp section and other stuff like does the master volume knob actually increase output evenly, like does at 5 it equal exactly 50% output in HDR or is it 43.7 or up to 59.2%

I have run the 2466 this way in both dynamic ranges for and hour or 2 at a time and nothing blew up or died. Its not quite the same as 4-12, but that could be due to less air being pushed and more-less speaker breakup.

You can get a Radial ABY pedal to correct any phase issues for about $75 and run both amps together or one at a time.

Not sure what peak output is on a 100 JDM, says it even 125 watts, you should be safe on master of 3-4 which the JMD is pretty loud at. BTW, the JDM does sound good thru 12C's IMO.
