Played through a JMD50 watt head this weekend..

Postby noise5150 » 27 Jul 2016, 10:48

...And I still dont care for it. When the JMD first came out, me and my bother both bought the 50 watt head version. I eventually sold mine because I just couldn't find a 3 or 4 sounds that I liked. I eventually settled on my current set up (a DSL40c.) I haven't played through one for a few years but I was visiting my brother this weekend and I played through his JMD and 4x12 cab and I instantly remembered WHY I sold it. I know the JMD line is popular on this forum, but I feel like the amps models are "anemic". None of the amp models have that chunky Marshall bottom end that even my DSL40 has. Its hard to explain. Not terrible and certainly you could easily gig with this full-featured amp. Maybe its just my ears.

Preamp 9 and 14 are pretty chunky. No amp is everything to everyone. I rather liked the JMD1, I have the 100watt head.

Not so funny enough, I've kept the 50 and 100 watt JMD's the longest of any Marshall(s) I've owned. I input in to the 100 and use one stereo FX return to the 50 watt. I run one or two JCM800's for a core sound, which I go high or lower gain with a six band eq and or a micro amp; the JMD's lock in a nice clean tone, a nice dirty 800 tone, and a great Mode 4 heavy tone, all able to be maxed out effect wise and layered thusly. I've had this set up for over two years, which is like a millennium, and I'm still satisfied live or at home, and most importantly....not bored. If I ever get bored and can't solve that problem with guitar music tone.....I'm done.

I wasn't knocked out by the JMD when I played a combo initially. But when Korg and Marshall cleared them out, I couldn't resist and am glad I got a 50 watt at the time, and then pursued a 100 used via Guitar Center when things like the noise gate and consistency of tone became apparent.
