NPD Wampler Tumnus

Postby Cousin Muely » 22 Jun 2017, 17:22

Just got this today from Sweetwater. I'm very impressed with this pedal and it is living up to the hype. I'd been considering it for a while for boosting my Mini Jubilee Head into my 2061CX cabinet. I tend to prefer the clipped rhythm channel on the amp and you can certainly play lead with this setting but I needed something that would push it some more but maintain the base tone. The Tumnus does that very well. It excites the tone and it still stays full sounding. My EH Soul Food had been pulling this duty but I lost some bottom end with it. Not so with the Tumnus and it just does it better. I have it set for low gain and to push the amp a bit more. My Les Paul is getting the tone I've been wanting with this setup already but the Tumnus has added that extra bite I've been wanting. I just plugged my 59 Stratocaster into this and same results. The tone is still there just more juicier. I also tested by running the amp clean and upped the gain on the pedal and it makes a great rich articulate drive sound on its own. Stacks well with my Xotic EP Boost which stays on and adds beef. I have no experience with a Klon but I think i get it now.

You got to go to Sweetwater? Did you say hi to Nick Bowcott? I here this place is HUGE, my favorite retailers where I buy all my gear unless they don;t sell it. My PRS I bought from them I have waited for shows up tomorrow.... I know what I will be doing all weekend.

I really like Wampler pedals and the owner, met him a few times at NAMM and he is just a guy I want to do business with, no bullshit just quality pedals at great prices.

Ordered from them. I have been keeping up with your PRS. That's a long time to arrive. I got the Tumnus in 3 days with free shipping. That's been consistent with everything. I've even got some things in 2.

But, you're uphill from them and I'm downhill. LOL!

Funny you ask that Torshalla. I've never really used the internal boost much at all on the JCM1. I pretty much always kept it set up as a straight up 800. But, Last Sunday I got that amp out for the first time in a while and of course I've had the Mini Jubilee since then. I found myself playing it with the boost circuit engaged. LOL! It definitely is in the ballpark of that tone.

Yes! I will beat this dead horse again and I agree with you Torshalla. I know nobody at Marshall will pay any attention to this but just like the 50ths they could sell the shit out of amps built like this at this wattage. Mini Plexi, JMP.....etc. IDIOTS!

How's that mini wah, comfort-wise? I would think the short length would make the rocker action a bit odd...

It is a different feel for sure. I've gotten accustomed to foot placement. Most of the time I wear boots so having it at the back edge helps. Only reason I bought it was it allows me to put this homemade board in a pistol case. My other Wahs are too big to close the lid. Sounds good though.

Glad it turned out to be a good pedal.
Keeping the bass in tact is a nice touch too.

I'm trying to hold back my excitement about this little box but I just tried this board through my Offset stack. If you guys knew how many pedals and combinations I've tried in front of this amp trying to find something that compliments you'd understand how big a deal this is. I've tried high dollar with Plexi in the name to no avail along with shots in the dark. The Tumnus combined with the EP is the absolute best by far. I have the amp around 1030 and tone around 11 o'clock using my Les Paul. Every step from no pedal to EP to Tumnus is just a complementary gain stage and the amp still sounds like a JTM but more cranked as I go. In fact it's a better drive sound than the amp cranked to that level to get that. It stays together sounding. And, this is all through the little matching 10" cabinet. It's actually ballsy sounding for such a little package. I think I just went through my entire catalog of Cream and Allman Brothers licks. I'm finding my controls on my Les Paul even more intuitive to the tone. This is crazy! Woman tone on the neck pickup is killer for one example. And it cleans up even with the pedals on.

That Dunlop Echoplex pedal and EP101 preamp is next. Even though the Xotic EP is supposed to be the same I want to try the Dunlop EP version as well with the Echoplex to see if there's a difference. I think there's headroom still left in the amp for this effect to work. That's always been the Achilles heel in this. I want echo when I want it so the amp has to be edge of breakup on its own. Now, the cranked amp tone is there!

Another one that I can strongly suggest is Wampler Euphoria (formerly named Ecstasy - completely the same pedal inside).
I am very eager to get the Tumnus as well and compare them / compliment them. But for some reason, I can't seem to find one used in Canada.

It's hard to describe as all pedals are when it comes to how they effect tone. It's tough for me anyway. The Tumnus just brings out the best in my guitars. They sound like themselves but they just sound better. Part of this goes to the EP circuit in that Xotic pedal being a great combination with it. I've had the EP for a while and I've definitely used it but it had been a while. I go through phases with different gear and pedals anyway.

I expect to have a Dunlop EP103 Echoplex and EP101 Preamp on my steps when I get home Thursday. I hope this works out cause I do get to use the 50ths out every so often and I expect this to be a great combination for that retro sound from the Offset. Miked up should be fantastic.
