New Pedal day - Unsung Hero

Postby surlybastard » 09 Jul 2012, 05:19

So I picked up a Boss SD-1 off a guy for $20 yesterday. I had one a few years ago that sounded good through everything except the amp I owned at the time, since then I've heard it used by a few people and thought that if I saw it for stupid cheap I'd pick one up again.

Anyhow, I think this is pretty much the best super cheap Overdrive pedal on the market. Roland dropped the price not so long ago to around $50 new, hence why I was able to score one for $20 and for that price you really can't go wrong, if for nothing else it's a great backup OD.

I noticed awhile back Proguitarshop did a new video on it, it's amazing what great tone you can get from something so cheap.

Good post surlybastard, and I liked your, "Unsung Hero" couldn't agree more.

I haven't listened to the SD1 in a long, long while. I'm not a big pedal guy, ol' school you know. But for the price point of the SD1, you just can't go wrong with her. Thanks for posting.
I was Jwalkin when it hit me

It's possible to convert this to a MI audio crunch box too, if you are so inclined.

I think I like my Tube Screamer with my Marshall a bit more, but I like using the SD-1 with my Valve Jr since it's such a muddy amp the SD-1 makes it nice and sharp and responsive, great for leads when I'm having some fun with the little amp.

They are a great pedal and a great pedal to mod also, there are a bunch of mods that can be found online if you do a search. The 'really needed' mods are replacing C6 with a .47k this opens up the sound while still retaining bass and also fitting a 8 pin opamp socket and putting a Burr Brown OPA2134 in there and also fitting a germanium 1n34 in D6 ... this is a total of a couple bucks worth of parts and 30 mins time and the pedal will go from great to awesome.
