looking for new reverb

Postby classic rock » 23 Aug 2008, 00:52

I know this probably isn' the best place to ask this but I think someone might be able to give me some advice. I am looking for a reverb pedal to use with my acoustic guitar when i plug into my PA. Do people use the same reverb pedals for electric and acoustic? If anyone has any knowledge on this please fill me in. Thanks.

This is the most impressive reverb pedal I've heard. I imagine it would work well with an acoustic also.

Here's another very good reverb pedal

I imagine the 'chorus/warm hall' mode would be wonderful with an acoustic. It's perfect for use into a PA since it's stereo out and gives a nice and wide sound if you pan the two channels apart.

I use a EHX holier grail reverb.
For very clean or acoustic sounds i prefer a hall reverb with a long trail.

I forgot to answer that question. Generally, in the studio, on acoustic guitars, a room or a very short hall works best for rhythm parts, on melody parts a longer and darker halls can work well. It's not so common to use reverb pedals, but rather the standard rack reverb units. For live gigs there's usually one or more rack reverbs in the PA rig. But it is of course nice to have total control over your own reverb, and a nice pedal works great for that.

I don't use the same type of reverb on acoustic and electric. On electric I prefer a spring or a plate type of reverb. In studio it's often nice to have a little bit of room on the electric as well. That is not really necessary live since the venue itself is the room.

Coincidentally, I just ordered a Mr. Springgy reverb pedal from Lee Jackson yesterday. I heard someone using one and was very impressed. I need some reverb for the new amp (65 Amps "London"). I hope it comes soon. No more pedals!

Got the Mr. Springgy reverb pedal yesterday. I have never owned a reverb pedal before, but I doubt there are any that sound better. Slowpokerhino was right - it is terrific. Somehow it gives the sound coming out of the amp more "life"... difficult to explain but it has to be heard to understand. I wasn't expecting to be blown away by a reverb pedal of all things.

I played it through my Vox AC30CC2x with the amp reverb off, then compared it to the amp reverb, and it was no contest. Also no contest through the VM. I don't have a Fender amp to compare it with.

The only "problems" with the pedal are that it is a somewhat larger than I expected (space is an issue on my small pedalboard) and it is difficult to insert the battery in its compartment.

I actually bought it to use with my new 65 Amps London amp which has no reverb, but this will now be a permanent part of my board. I think it might also replace my analog delay pedal which I was mostly using with a very short delay setting to get a "reverby" sound.

Thanks for the update BNS. I use my delay the same way when using my VM but with my Twin I usually just leave it off, don't need it. The Mr. Springgy is now on "the short list".

I have the Electro Harmonix Holy Grail Plus Reverb, amazing and a step up over the Holy Grail. Very happy with this pedal.

Here's another good demo of the "Mr. Springgy":

I find it sounds better in the loop, particularly at higher gain. If I am using a reverb (or delay) pedal with an amp with no effects loop, I turn it off when I use an overdriven sound.
