ModTone Clean Boost

Postby BenjiJuanKenobi » 02 Jul 2009, 10:05

Anybody have any experience with this fairly new pedal? The ModTone Clean Boost claims to be a true bypass pedal that adds volume without changing the sonic "color" of your sound.

Personally I don't see how this is possible.
Any pedal that boosts the signal going into the preamp is going to change the tone simply by adding gain.
I have an Xotic RC booster that is a "clean" boost but it still adds gain.
Assuning you're not running the power amp section loud then the only way to achieve a clean "clean" boost is to boost the power amp.
Just my opinion.

musicman is right. A clean boost is possible by running it in the loop, provided of course that you haven't maxed out the headroom.

i think people misunderstand what a "clean boost" is. of course boosting the signal will add gain from the amps preamp. but the boost itself is not adding gain, so is therefore a "clean boost". people misunderstand this and then they wrongly think they can boost the signal without any added gain.

clean boost means the booster does not add gain itself.

Not sure if you're agreeing or disagreeing with me there Dean - no worries either way.
You are correct - a "clean" boost doesn't add gain but boosts the signal & the pre-amp does the rest.

All banter and debate aside, does anybody on the forum have any experience with this relatively new pedal? I am curious about personal impressions on the results with a Vintage Modern.
