Multiple Amps/Guitars

Postby wharris » 09 Jul 2009, 21:20

I am using a Voodoo Lab Amp Selector to run my 2266 and a Boogie Mk III (for cleans). I also need connect two guitars (Les Paul and Strat) to the selector (my current live situation requires an occasional guitar with non-standard tuning as well as clean - very dirty tones for a wide variety of songs). As it stands now, Only one of the guitars goes into my pedal board and then to the Amp Selector. I want a way to make my board available to either guitar. Can anyone suggest a workaround for this? I feel like the answer is right under my nose, but I'm just not "seeing" it. :smash

Any a/b switcher will work. Just reverse it: 2 in and 1 out. Since you don't have to worry about ground loops or noise issues I'd go cheap.

Please excuse my ignorance... are you saying that instead of each guitar going into a separate input on the Amp Selector, just put each guitar into A/B box then out to pedal board? If so, would you put a buffer before the A/B box or as first in line on the pedal board? Thanks for your help.

Put the A/B first in line (before your pedalboard) and plug each guitar in to the two "outputs" and run a cable from single "input" to your pedalboard.

I recommend this one. http://www.loop-master.com/product_info ... ucts_id=53 I've used their products in the past and they are top notch. They custom make them for you so I'm sure if you email them when you order they can switch the sides the jacks are on to make it suit your needs.

You don't need an A/B/Y unless you plan on playing both guitars at the same time. And that I'd like to see. :winking

I have enough trouble playing one guitar at a time! However... I want to have everything set up so that I can switch guitars quickly (between songs) without having to unplug any cables. Am I thinking about this correctly?

with an A/B box you wont need to unplug cables. just stomp on the switch and it will change which guitar is passed thru to your pedal board.

for example if youv a les paul and a strat. if yer playin the LP ya just put it down, pick up the strat and step on the switch and yer good to go!!
Everybody seems to think i'm lazy.
I dont mind...I think they're crazy!

Thanks for the kind replies. I found a cool company that does custom and mod work. They've got some very helpful folks. I'm gonna go with their Mini A/B box. These guys are also Lava Cable dealers. I am going to do my pedal board with the Mini ELC cable. Can't decide on solder-free vs. traditional soldered right angle connectors. Any opinions out there?

In case you haven't already placed your order, I use a Startouch A/B pedal to do exactly what you are trying to do (2 guitars into pedalboard). http://www.startouchpedals.com/home.html.

I also had a custom box built for me by Maxxplay which is awesome and affordable. http://www.electrick-garage.com/ Mine has 2 guitar inputs, 2 amp outputs, tuner mute, effects loop on/off, and a couple of switches for the boost and tremolo functions on my London amp. It sits at the front of my pedalboard (lengthwise) and takes up surprisingly little room. It also has a different color LED for each switch. I would check them out as he can build you anything you want.

I recommend both of those companies for build quality (especially Startouch) and customer service (especially Maxxplay).

Also, I have a Lava Cables on my board and they are great. I don't do right angle cables, but that's just me. One mistake I made was ordering them too short. My board is small and I like to keep 5 or 6 pedals on it at any time (tuner, compressor, OD, fuzz, vibe, delay) so to make them all fit I need to put them together like a puzzle and run cables all around. If your board is small, then consider that a "tip".
