Setting a delay

Postby Ghostrider » 04 Sep 2009, 11:48

I am having a bit of confusion trying to get a good delay tone with my DD6 and this amp. What are some of the settings or do's/dont's when using a delay with a amp like this? I am new to using delays and it is really speading the tone out like a reverb would or the signal is very wet if you will and I just want to hear a couple of strong repeat backs.

Well it's been awhile since I had a Boss delay but, I will share my generic favorite type settings. I like 2 kinds of delay, first is a rockabilly type slap back. 1-1.5 repeats, level or mix about 50%, and time really short, say 40-50ms. 2nd type is more of an ambiant sit back in the mix type to me. 3-4 repeats, mix 20-40%(so the delay is quite a bit lower in level than the original note) and a time of say 250-350ms, still a quick time by todays standards.

Hope this helps a little.

Sounds to me like ypu are running the delay between your guitar and amp. Try plugging it into the fx-loop. Delays should always go trough the loop, they sound much better there. More dynamic and clear. And remember, you don't want to use same power supply (a daisy chaining method) for pedals between guitar and amp, and pedals in the loop. By doing so you are creating hissing and buzzing ground loops. Apologies if you are already aware of this...

I run a one spot on my loop pedals and on the pedals out in front. No Issues whatsoever.

You had good luck with that 1Spot then. I had nothing but bad experiences with it, both the 1amp and 1,7amp versions. Microvibe and dynacomp pedals both went crazy (swirling and hissing) with a 1Spot. DD20 made a cliking noise with it. That seems to be the issue with those digital power supplys (they are originally ment for laptops and charging mobile phones and such, not for audio), some pedals work fine with them, while the others have majos noise-problems. I solved my problems with a PP2+. But then again you can have that good old punk-attitude and care less about some noise on the background. Or go absolutely nuts about it.

FWIW, I tried an RE20 in the loop and nothing but noise using 2 different power supplies. It went away, although it was pretty cool out in front playing clean.

I find it odd how same amp, same power supplys for different people get different results. I have 8 pedals currently on a 1 spot atm, 3 in the loop, dead silent. My overdrives seem to be getting a bit more noise than usual, I'm guessing I have an edgy tube or two.
