New AFD 100 owner:)

Postby Gr8one_27 » 24 Apr 2012, 17:55

Hello guys. I am new to this forum and the new proud owner of the AFD 100. I have been carefully reviewing, researching, saving for a new marshall head and have frequented this site to help gain valuable information that would help me make my decision. Everyone here is very knowledgable and respectful so it's a nice change from the norm. I had fully planned on picking up a vintage modern today at my local dealer in Alberta Canada and what did I see in the background but a shiny silver faceplated amp with a cool little tophat wearing character on it. The best part is that the price was almost exactly the same as the vintage modern as it was on sale so it was a no brainer.

Anyways I'm sorry for the long introduction but I have to admit, one of the things that sold me on a Marshall amp besides the awesome tone, was this forum. I think there is a ton of collective knowledge here and a big group of people that love what I love, rock and roll. I hope to be able to bring some input and knowledge once I get acquainted with my new amp. I look forward to being a part of this forum. :shredder

Welcome to the Forum!

I don't think you'd regret either choice the AFD100 or Vintage Modern, theres things each can do that one can't and theres also places where they intersect on that classic Marshall tone. In the future grab a VM if you can :) but I would have done exactly the same & grabbed the AFD100 price for price like that!. I think with a Vm and AFD100 the tone options are wide open!.

Thanks for the welcome. I haven't given up the idea of purchasing the vintage modern yet and I agree they would be amazing as a team! I have another amp I'm trying to sell so with that extra cash it may happen sooner than later. I've only been able to play the afd for a couple of hours so far but I'm getting some great tones out of it.

Please feel free to record some tunes and post them! I've yet to try an actual AFD100 but I have tried a modded #34 JCM 800 and that was quite an amazing amplifier!

congratulations on the amp, and the deal you got! i'm lucky enough to have both amps, and they are both great. i'll admit, it's a while now since i've switched on my VM, but ask me again in a couple of months and it might be the other way around :beerme

Thanks again for the welcome fellas. :beerme I have a Blackstar 100 watt head that I initially tried to trade in but the dealer offered an insulting amount so I ended up keeping it. If I have any luck selling it on the classifieds I'll be looking into the Vintage Modern as I haven't been happy with the Blackstar since day one, very boxy sounding head IMO.

I completely agree with dialing it in by ear and not the eyes. I remember reading a post a while back about the humour of feeling guilty turning back the presence and treble and it's so true. The amp already has that characteristic bite to it and really doesn't need that much more high end frequencies added to take you to crunch town.

I am missing the option of footswitchable reverb but that's easliy fixable with a good pedal so no sweat. I really like #34 contrary to what I've been reading, especially with the neck pup. Kick in the AFD for some fat growl. It's Awesome. Slashwannabe I don't have any recording equip or even a working laptop to upload to so it may be a while for a sample because an iphone recording would just be insulting to the amps true sound. For now I'm stuck with my iphone for writing on this forum or my work computer. I should invest in a Q3 or something of that nature so I can show what it can do. For now I've already decided my next purchase though...Swapping out my EMG(81/85) :lame equipped axe with some proper warm Humbuckers.
