First Problem with the AFD

Postby Slash1337 » 24 Jun 2012, 23:28

So yesterday I was playing along to so shit, and the volume of my amp drastically dropped. Then about 10 seconds it went back to normal. I didn't really notice it at first as I usually jam out pretty loud and the music and my amp are usually at same volume. I thought maybe it was my cables which have been used and abused. So today I switched out the cables and it's doing it again. There is no pop sound or whatever. It's almost like a ghost is switching the attenuater from 1 wattage to the next and then back up again. But it's random. So I thought maybe it was my new Gibson, maybe a Pickup problem, so I plugged my Epi in and same thing. Like I said, no hums, no buzz, no pops. Just gets really quiet and than goes back to the regular volume it's supposed to be at.

Starting to think it's a tube issue and haven't turned the amp on since. So what do you guys think? Power tubes, or pre-amp tubes? Or something else?

If it is doing it when the EPA is all the way down it could be an input power issue. Re-bias.

If it is doing it at normal playing volume I suspect you may have a tube on the way out. Re-bias, if this doesn't work check your indicator lights to see if any of them are illuminated. My money is on a tube though mate.

Let us know what happens pls....

Is the EPA on an "in between" position? This can cause the sound to fluctuate a bit as the knob isn't "sure" what setting it's on.

I'm gonna try and move the knob a little more and see what happens. Although I haven't really moved the settings on the amp in ages. I'll check the back as well.

So, I moved the power know a little more and no more problems. That's pretty weird that it does that, definetly be keeping that in mind for when I play live with it.

You should see it you can replicate that, should tell you if it is something you need to be cognizant of or it was just an anomaly.

So far so good. I think I'm gonna find out where the right spots are where it wont do have volume drops etc with like some tape or something. I checked the tube lights in the back and none were lit so I think the tubes are okay. I think marking the spots would be my best bet. Volume drops live would be a problem :P
