AFD 100 comparison with Classic Lead 80s and Vin 30s

Postby surfnorthwest » 11 Aug 2012, 09:14

Thought some of you AFD owners might find this interesting. I am a big fan of the Celestion Classic Lead 80s, I find them great for high gain and very accurate.

In that comparison clip I prefer the sound of the 80's too they have a nice "throaty" tone, the V30's sound like they have a blanket over the cab.

Thanks...

I have a 4x12 of Lead 80s are I really like them, seems like they do everything well. I wish there was 4-6 cabinet switcher like there are amp switchers.

Now that is an idea! Switching between greenback, lead 80's or V30's cabinents on a single amp would be amazing. I just wonder how fast the switch would be... If you strumed a C maj while switching cabinents how long would the delay be? I only ask this question because as I think about it, I imagine the sound being at low volume and linearly increasing to max volume in 1-2 seconds of time.

Why couldn't an amp switcher work? The inputs are the same, just different cable. Or would the box have to be modified?

On a tube amps the transformer needs to have a load, this is why you never want to power on your amp without the speaker cabinet connected. So it is possible if you only were running one head into two cabinets but if you use more then two you then run into the issue of Ohms mismatch. This gets to complicated to write about in short time. But if you had a single head and 4 4x12 cabinets you would have a ohm load of 2.... that isn't going to work.

Someone smarter then me can chime in here. I know Radial (love their products) make a cabinet switcher but you are limited to using only two cabinets. I have never seen a switcher or a way to use more then two. For the AFD the Radial Cab-Bone Speaker Cabinet Switcher may be worth a look.

Thats a cool comparison thanks Surf, i got a cab with V30s with my AFD100 and enjoy it alot although i do see were some people so about them being ice-picky, do they loose that once there really broken in?. I also have a combo with a CL80 in it which ive tried with the AFD100 but i find its missing something when trying to capture the AFD tone (but it does nail the SCOM intro) it just doesnt have that big sound off the V30s, i would probably need to try a cab of CL80s to get a real feel for them.

Wow, thanks surf, that is a great video. Vintage 30s almost always seem to sound great to me, but in this case the Classic Lead 80s blew them away! I think I'm might have to order some Classic Lead 80s myself!

Funny thing, I had lost track of which of my Avatar cabinets contained which speakers. Turns out that the 2x12 through which I'm playing my AFD 100 head has both a Vintage 30 and a Classic Lead 80. LOL. My other Avatar 2x12 cab has a Hellatone 30 and a Hellatone 60.

I liked the V30's better.
Many Marshall's, and I want more.

Thats something ive been trying to find out for a while, and the only info i can find is in forums so this my not be true, but after the recording of AFD, Slash started using V30s and Duff decided to use Slashs cab and it turns out it was a JCM 800 cab with CL8Os in it, i have tried my AFD100 with a both V30s (cab) and CL80 (single) and apart my playing the SCOM intro i prefer the V30s, and as we know the AFD100 was designed using V30s so i guess it should.Cheers

Thanks Maxamus
I wanted to say that the AFD cab sounded like CL80's but I wasn't sure. Personal preference, I am kinda torn between the two as far as the AFD sound goes. CL80's sound good for somethings and V30's sound good for others.

I think the Classic Lead 80s sound so much better with the AFD 100 head than the Vintage 30s sound, but that's just my opinion of course.
